In 1953, Short Creek, Arizona, is a remote, patriarchal religious community where members dress in old-fashioned clothing and perform domestic and agricultural chores with traditional tools. The town is tightly controlled, with outsiders discouraged from contact and a strict code guiding daily life. State authorities begin investigating the group for polygamy and child marriage, foreshadowing a raid that will upend the settlement.
