Eddie Devane, a young sailor, has been executing inventory-related scams with his partner Howard, accumulating a significant amount of money during his service. On the day before his discharge, he is assigned to escort a prisoner from Camp Lejeune alongside Chief Petty Officer Rock Reilly, which he finds displeasing. The situation sets the stage for the ensuing journey and conflicts.

Howard notices Eddie being escorted by seamen and mistakenly believes Eddie has been caught for his scams. To destroy evidence, Howard searches Eddie's desk and discovers the hidden money, deepening the tension and complicating their relationship.

Eddie and Rock's personalities clash repeatedly during their trip to Camp Lejeune. Their differing attitudes create tension as they travel, foreshadowing future conflicts and setting a hostile tone for the journey.

Upon reaching their destination, they find out that their prisoner is a young woman named Toni Johnson. This discovery adds complexity to their task as she attempts to escape and initiate further chaos.

Toni disguises herself as a waitress and tries to escape at a diner, but is caught. She then damages the van by putting tampons in the gas tank, causing it to stall in the road. These actions reveal her desperation and resourcefulness.

While walking, the trio falls into an abandoned mine shaft. They struggle to escape, using each other's shoulders to climb out, showcasing their growing reliance on one another amidst adversity.

Toni escapes from the mine area, leaving Eddie and Rock behind, but later reconsiders and comes back to help them. This act demonstrates her developing sense of loyalty and emotional change.

They stay overnight at a motel where they bond over conversations in a diner. Rock shares his personal struggles, and Toni reveals her troubled past, leading to a deeper understanding of each other's motivations.

Eddie learns from Howard over the phone that Howard has stolen all the money and the planned new car. Toni overhears this, realizes Howard embezzled $150,000, and feels distressed. She then seduces Eddie, adding emotional tension.

Toni runs away, steals a car, and attempts to escape. Eddie and Rock pursue her, falling into chaos when their van crashes at an amusement park, and they catch up to her only to find she’s headed to her brother’s funeral.

They confront Toni about her brother’s funeral and have a heated fistfight. Later, at a bar, Toni apologizes and reveals she listened to Howard’s conversation, which helps reconcile Eddie and Rock, strengthening their bond.

Eddie and Rock, determined to free Toni, sabotage her transport ship. Eddie impersonates a tow truck driver and successfully takes her away in a stolen van, defying the authorities to save her.

One year later, Eddie and Toni are living happily somewhere south of the border, while Rock, now retired, begins a new relationship with a waitress. This closing scene shows their new beginnings after the tumultuous events.
