Charulata is an intelligent, artistic wife who feels isolated within her well-serviced home. Bhupati is a wealthy Bengali intellectual who edits a small political newspaper. Amal is Bhupati’s younger cousin who arrives with a desire to write but is pressed into helping with the paper.
