In the sweltering summer of Baltimore, 14-year-old Mouse finds himself wandering the gritty streets of his city, torn between his love for motorbikes and the haunting memories of his older brother Stro, who tragically lost his life in a biking accident at the age of 17. His mother remains on high alert, wary of her son’s interest in the very activity that claimed her eldest child’s life. Nevertheless, Mouse is irresistibly drawn to The Ride, a weekly showcase where daredevils display their skills on custom bikes.

Despite his mother’s stern warnings, Mouse sneaks out to join his friends Lamont and Sweartagawd at The Ride, where he decides to purchase an old four-wheeler. This impulsive joyride soon catches the attention of the police, leading to a tense encounter with Detective Rivers, who has been a guiding figure in Mouse’s life through community outreach programs. Rivers urges Mouse to stay out of trouble, yet the allure of the thrill of The Ride pulls him in deeper.

During his escapades, Mouse meets Nicki, a newcomer to the neighborhood with a flair for photography, and he invites her to join him and his friends at the stunt-filled event. They are captivated by a biker gang known as the Midnight Clique, which concludes their performance with a daring police chase, leaving a lasting impression on Mouse, especially with the presence of the notorious Blax, who has just been released from prison.

Later that evening, the trio visits the Clique’s hangout, only to be told to leave. However, fate intervenes when Mouse encounters Blax at a local bike repair shop, where Blax works as part of his parole. Their conversation reveals a connection to Mouse’s late brother Stro, who was once involved with the Clique. Blax, impressed by Mouse’s loyalty, gives him a box of parts to build his own bike, also agreeing to extend the same opportunity to Lamont and Sweartagawd.

As the summer unfolds, Mouse becomes increasingly immersed in the dangerous yet thrilling world of motorbikes, frequently working at Blax’s auto shop while neglecting his responsibilities at the local animal hospital. Amidst this whirlwind, he is given the chance to deliver a high-end bike to a customer but instead turns it into an impromptu joyride with Nicki. The adventure takes a dark turn when they encounter Derrick, an old acquaintance of Stro’s, who proves to be untrustworthy, ultimately stealing the bike Mouse was meant to deliver.

Realizing he needs guidance, Mouse confides in Lamont and Sweartagawd, only to discover Derrick’s dreadful reputation for dismantling stolen bikes. They confront Derrick at his chop shop, but tensions rise when he pulls a gun on them, resulting in a dangerous standoff. Luckily, Blax and the Midnight Clique arrive just in time, warning Derrick of the consequences of his actions.

However, Mouse’s choices don’t come without repercussions. Blax, feeling betrayed, revokes Mouse’s privilege to work on his bike, forcing him to earn back his respect. As financial burdens weigh heavily on Mouse’s mother, he pleads with Blax to put him on the payroll, but his request is met with refusal, prompting Mouse to quit and join his friends in the Midnight Clique’s drug delivery business.

As conflict brews between Mouse and Blax, Nicki attempts to reconnect in a local park, but Mouse’s apathy leads him to ride away with another girl. Meanwhile, Detective Rivers keeps a close watch on Mouse, warning Blax to steer clear of the teenager. In a shocking turn of events, Mouse’s mother discovers his hidden stash of cash, leading to a confrontation that forces him to leave home and seek refuge with Sweartagawd.

Lamont devises a scheme to rob a convenience store to prove their worth to the Clique, and Mouse reluctantly agrees to participate. The situation escalates unexpectedly as Lamont’s rash actions endanger them all, resulting in a heartbreaking loss when Sweartagawd is killed during the chaos. In the aftermath, with Detective Rivers on their trail, Mouse seeks refuge at Blax’s shop, where he confides in Blax, who ultimately takes the blame and sacrifice for Mouse’s decisions, getting arrested in the process.

As the dust settles, Mouse finds solace by adopting Blax’s dog, bringing a sense of peace back into his life. He makes amends with his mother and reconnects with Nicki, offering a heartfelt apology for past mistakes. A chance meeting with Lamont symbolizes the friendships that have changed, yet despite the distance, they share an unspoken bond. With fresh groceries in hand, Mouse steps into his home, ready for a new beginning and to make things right.
