Esthappan Aasan is a veteran stage artist and director who also makes his living as a fisherman. He runs a small drama troupe with his daughter Liza and another actor, Charlie. In the same coastal town, Anto is a young fisherman whose close friend Pappi works with the troupe. Anto is a lively, sometimes reckless soul who drinks and gambles in his free time, and he lives with his sister Ammu. Ponnu, Pappi’s sister, harbors a crush on Anto, while Ammu waits for her lover Raghu, who is seen as working overseas and hoped to return soon. Esthappan Aasan detests Anto at first, resenting him for teasing the “drama-loving fisherman” inside Aasan.

Despite their rough start, the pair find common ground after a chance encounter at a local toddy shop filled with music and dance, and a wary but growing friendship forms. When Anto’s lack of attendance at rehearsal puts the next church festival play in jeopardy, Aasan decides to give Anto the lead role that he had promised, discovering in him a natural talent that far surpasses expectation. Anto’s performance at the church festival is a resounding success, earning praise and opening doors for the troupe to book another church event with Anto as lead.

Yet tensions surface as Charlie returns, claiming he can still take the lead when needed because of prior commitments. Aasan, reluctant, lets go of Anto, and the attempt with Charlie turns out uneven—Charlie lacks the same rhythm and forgets lines, dampening the troupe’s momentum. In a turn of events, Charlie, who finances the troupe, pushes for a shift toward a social drama, bringing in a new writer who insists on directing and even offers Aasan a role if he renovates the project. Humiliated, Aasan walks away and decides to write and stage a new drama with Anto as the lead, centered around the story of Alexander the Great.

During beach rehearsals, Charlie interrupts again, arguing that Liza is bound to his arrangement and threatens legal action unless he lands the lead. Aasan rejects this meddling and dismisses Charlie, who then introduces his own stipulations. Liza responds by suggesting Ammu as the lead actress, and the new production goes ahead with Anto and Ammu at the forefront, quickly becoming a success. The romance between Anto and Liza blooms offstage, and Aasan grants his blessing for their future marriage.

The mood darkens when Raghu, Ammu’s beloved, is seen watching the pair perform with a troubled heart. He confronts Ammu at their home, beating her, and reveals a controversial truth: Ammu is not Anto’s sister, and she is Hindu. He accuses them of betrayal and infidelity, fueling rumors that Charlie has stoked Raghu’s anger in a bar after a performance. The story then shifts to reveal the couple’s history in a lengthy flashback: as a boy, Anto was mentored by Ammu’s father after his own stepfather’s abuse, growing up in close proximity to Ammu as if siblings. Ammu’s relationship with Raghu complicates matters, and when the two try to elope, a violent confrontation results in the death of Ammu’s younger brother. Raghu flees, and Anto and Ammu relocate, choosing to live as siblings while they wait for Raghu’s return and grapple with their choices.

Raghu eventually returns and attempts to force Ammu into a disastrous situation, prompting Aasan and Anto to defend Ammu once more. Sensing danger, Aasan instructs Pappi to keep an eye on Anto, fearing that Raghu’s vendetta could erupt backstage. In a tense green-room confrontation, Raghu struggles to reach the backstage, and a brutal fight ensues: Raghu fatally stabs Aasan, and Aasan, in a final act of defiance, overpowers Raghu and dies. The tragedy climaxes not in secrecy but on stage, as Aasan returns to perform his final scene—dying on stage in his costume, delivering the last moment as he had always wished, a testament to a life spent in storytelling and performance. The troupe is left to contend with grief and the enduring power of art that outlives the artist.
