Charlie Hawkins runs Speedee Taxis with relentless focus on the business, leaving his wife Peggy feeling neglected. Peggy's resentment grows as he logs long hours and misses family moments. The tension between work and home becomes the emotional backbone of the story.

Charlie misses their fifteenth wedding anniversary because he is out cabbing, despite promising Peggy a night out. Peggy's sense of being taken for granted peaks as she faces his absence once again. She decides to punish him, setting the stage for a counter-move.

For tax reasons, all company funds are held in Peggy's name. She tells Charlie she is going to 'get a job' and uses the money to establish a rival company, GlamCabs. The GlamCabs fleet is brand-new Ford Cortina Mk1s driven by attractive drivers in provocative uniforms, signaling a bold new venture. Flo, the wife of one of Charlie's drivers, is appointed to the post of office manager.

Charlie continues to coach his mainly inept drivers, including Terry 'Pintpot' Tankard, while Peggy refuses to tell him about her new job or the rival company. He senses something is changing but remains eager to know what she is up to. GlamCabs' success begins to widen the gap with Speedee.
