Carry On Cabby

Charlie Hawkins runs a thriving taxi empire, Speedee Taxis, known for its quick pickups and dependable service across the city. Yet his wife, Peggy Hawkins, feels neglected by his relentless hours on the road. After he misses their fifteenth wedding anniversary, having been out cabbing, Peggy decides to teach him a lesson and take control of the situation.

For tax reasons, all the company funds are held in Peggy’s name, so she tells Charlie that she is going to “get a job” and uses the money to establish a rival company, GlamCabs. The cars are brand new Ford Cortina Mk1s driven by attractive girls in provocative uniforms. Flo Flo Sims is appointed to the post of office manager, a move that signals a dramatic shift in the power dynamics of the taxi world.

Charlie continues to coach his primarily inept drivers, including the clumsy Terry ‘Pintopot’ Tankard, while Peggy refuses to share details about her new venture. Charlie pretends indifference, but secretly longs to know what she’s up to—especially as she now works long hours herself. He soon discovers that Peggy’s new operation is thriving, attracting a large chapter of male passengers who ogle its drivers, and the public buzz pushes Speedee toward trouble, with money flowing out and debt mounting.

Desperate to regain control, Charlie and his team launch petty sabotage attempts against GlamCabs, but they are chased off and forced to retreat. A merger with GlamCabs is proposed as a last-ditch effort, but Charlie is furious to learn the truth about the rival’s ownership and storms off in anger.

A month passes. Peggy is living at the office, and Charlie has turned to drink, letting Speedee falter toward bankruptcy. Then trouble reaches a new height when Peggy and Sally are hijacked by gangsters. Peggy uses the taxi radio to drop subtle clues about their location, and Charlie quickly intercepts the broadcast, rallying the Speedee drivers to give chase. In a tense pursuit, the gang is cornered and captured, restoring some order to the chaotic city streets.

In the end, Peggy and Charlie are reconciled, their relationship tempered by hardship and brighter prospects, especially since Peggy is expecting a baby, promising a fresh future for their family and the business.
