What Happens in Behave Yourself!: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Behave Yourself! (1951) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Mild-mannered Bill Denny [Farley Granger] forgets about his and his wife Kate's second anniversary until a stray dog starts to follow him through a busy day. His wife Kate Denny [Shelley Winters] is convinced the dog is the perfect surprise, and her excitement pulls Bill into a ridiculous chain of events that quickly spirals out of control. As the dog weaves through the streets, Bill finds himself pursued by police, smugglers, counterfeiters, and murderers, all while being harassed by his persistent mother-in-law.

Since Archie insists on sleeping in their bed, Bill and Kate's celebration is indefinitely postponed, adding a steady stream of comic tension to their already precarious situation. The dog becomes a magnet for trouble, and three different criminal gangs post lost-dog advertisements, hoping to claim the unlikely lead. Each time Bill answers one of the ads, he discovers a dead body at the scene and unwittingly leaves panicky clues that reveal he was there, dragging him deeper into danger.

Bill is hauled to the police station and grilled by homicide chief O'Ryan [William Demarest], who senses that the case is spiraling beyond ordinary misfortune and toward something more perilous. Meanwhile, Meek mild "Max The Umbrella" [Marvin Kaplan] stands on 24-hour duty at a spot where the dog is supposed to pass by, keeping watch regardless of the weather. The misread trust between Max and the Denny family leads to a costly mix-up: when Kate walks by with the dog, Max mistakes her for a mob member and hands her the goods—$100,000 in counterfeit money.

When the counterfeit money is discovered, the surviving mobsters converge on the Denny home for a climactic showdown. Guns blaze and chaos erupts as the mobsters shoot at each other, with Pinky [Lon Chaney Jr.] among the chaos, until Bill engineers a bold move that knocks him out by forcing him to back away from a high window. The danger subsides, but the tension remains.

With the reward money suddenly within reach, Bill and Kate can finally dream of buying their own house and escaping the meddling mother-in-law. Yet Archie remains a permanent part of the family, a reminder that not every burden is easily shed.
