Eli Miles Elliot lives in a small town where his mother struggles with addiction and largely ignores him, while his transient father drifts in and out, showing up only to demand money. On the evening of Eli’s birthday, his mother disappears, and when his father can’t find money, he strikes Eli with a broom, sending him to the hospital and leading to his removal from his mother’s care. The opening years are bleak, but they lay the groundwork for a travel toward something different.

Ken Matthews [Michael Mattera] is an investment adviser who is pressured by his assistant to impress a potential client by serving as a camp counselor at a camp she supports. The camp director, a former high school classmate who has since slimmed down and become very attractive, asks Ken to step in. It’s a Christian summer camp, though Ken admits he does not pray, and another counselor hints that his perspective might change by the end of the week. This setup foreshadows a clash between cynicism and possibility.

Eli is sent to the same summer camp after his mother dies from a heroin overdose. Ken and Eli are paired as counselor and camper, and Eli arrives with anger and rebellion. He runs away, and he openly challenges Ken, setting a tense tone. Ken and Eli bunk in a cabin with Samuel, a counselor back from his second tour in the army, and Redford, a kid who believes he is an alien. The camp becomes a crucible where trust has to be earned.

Over the course of the week, Ken’s guard begins to crumble as he learns about Eli’s dark past, and he starts to love Eli unconditionally. Eli slowly opens up to Ken, and with that willingness to care, he begins to find a glimmer of hope. What starts as a professional obligation grows into a profound, transformative bond.

Eli is then placed in Locustwood, a facility that feels more like a youth prison than a camp. The environment fuels his anger and deepens his depression, creating a darker current beneath the hopeful surface of camp life. An unauthorized visit from Eli’s father to the camp sends everything spiraling, and Ken must decide what he is willing to sacrifice so Eli will understand the meaning of unconditional love. The narrative pivots on the choices Ken makes and the quiet power of steadfast support.
