On New Year’s Eve in 1997, Shane Batesman hosts a huge party that swells to about 200 guests, drawing attention from the street outside as the night grows louder. Across the street, the McIntosh home is alive with friends and celebration, but the noise soon becomes a point of tension. Bob McIntosh [David Cubitt] can’t locate Shane Batesman, who has slipped away to grab more alcohol, and he inadvertently finds himself in what appears to be Shane’s parents’ bedroom. There, a group of boys retreat to drink and use drugs; when Bob asks them to leave, they turn hostile, and he is knocked down. The ambulance arrives too late, and Bob dies on the way to the hospital.
Katy McIntosh [Kim Raver] is crushed by the loss and determined to uncover the truth. She presses Detective Paul Jackson [Greg Grunberg] to pursue every lead, knowing that the case hinges on breaking a wall of silence that surrounds the teens and their parents. The community response is mixed: some rally to protect the young people, while Katy feels unjustly accused of persecuting youths who could never do such a thing. The tension between a grieving wife, a stubborn detective, and a neighborhood that wants to preserve its own complicity makes the investigation deeply challenging.
Just when the case seems to stall, an anonymous email arrives that changes the course of the inquiry. Jordan [Haley Ramm], who has realized that her boyfriend Ryan [Charlie McDermott] is hiding something, steps into the light with information that could illuminate what happened that night. Ryan is arrested and initially refuses to answer questions from the police, but Katy convinces him to speak up, offering her support in return for honesty. Ryan ultimately confesses that he was the one who struck Bob repeatedly and kicked him, while his friends only shoved him. He attributes the violence to the influence of alcohol.
The admission leads to a conviction and a five-year prison sentence for Ryan, who, after serving his time, shifts his focus toward atonement. Upon release, he and Katy begin visiting high schools to warn students about the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption, turning a personal tragedy into a public cautionary tale. The story unfolds as a stark examination of how communities respond to violence among youth, the consequences of binge drinking, and the possibility of reconciliation and prevention through accountability and education.
