On their honeymoon, newlywed Silas Parker, James Franco, and Camille Foster Sienna Miller set off toward Niagara Falls, with Silas hoping the trip to Canada will be his path to freedom after marrying the parole officer’s niece. Silas, a thief by trade, carries a heavy tension: he cannot stand Camille, while she remains blissfully convinced that the journey will wash away their problems. The excitement of the trip and the superstition around luck—the idea that nothing bad should happen if rice is thrown at a wedding—hangs over them as they travel.
Tragedy strikes when their honeymoon bike crashes on the way to the falls. Camille dies in the accident, and Silas, convinced he is responsible, bolts into a nearby house to call for help but hangs up in confusion. When he returns to the site, he finds Camille alive, washing in a river. As the journey continues, he discovers that Camille’s body is decaying, a stark reminder of her true fate. Yet amidst this horror, Silas’s guilt softens him, revealing a more compassionate side he never showed before as he tends to her and tries to keep her alive in whatever way he can.
The authorities believe Silas killed his wife, and a relentless manhunt ensues. To escape capture, the couple is joined by a weathered rodeo cowboy with a string of colored horses, including Maggie, an old, stubborn horse who seems to outlast every obstacle. Maggie’s presence becomes a quiet symbol of endurance, especially as the pair’s bond deepens. Camille’s deterioration continues to unfold, but together they share intimate moments—dances and a rain-soaked kiss—that hint at a fragile hope.
Their journey with the cowboy reaches a crescendo when he suffers a breakdown and releases all his horses. Maggie, loyal to her rider, refuses to abandon them, and the old horse carries Camille and Silas forward as the dawn breaks. They finally reach Niagara Falls and board a boat tour, a scene that feels like a final chance to glimpse happiness. Silas smiles at Camille’s presence, but she tells him she is ready now, prompting a powerful, heartbreaking moment when he turns to take a photo and discovers she has vanished.
Pursued by the police, Silas races to the edge of the viewing point, where the world seems to split between illusion and reality. Camille reappears, riding Maggie toward him, and asks why he didn’t go on without her. He confesses that he couldn’t leave her, and they share a tender, long-awaited declaration of love: “I love you.” She responds with a quiet gratitude, “I had a great honeymoon,” and Silas echoes, “Me too,” before the trio—Silas, Camille, and Maggie—move toward the edge of the falls.
In a final, mystical moment, Maggie surges forward and plunges over the precipice with Camille and Silas on her back, vanishing into the mist. As the rush of the moment fades, rice begins to fall from the sky, as if the ceremony’s old superstition has finally been fulfilled in a mythic, unforgettable exit.
