Frustrated with his dead-end job and low pay, Marty hatches a plan to stick it to the corporate world. He begins cooking up small scams that mimic legitimate processes rather than committing high-risk crimes. The effort is more about venting anger than making a fortune.

Marty swipes a stack of refund checks from the company and forges the payees' signatures to sign several checks over to himself. He uses this stolen money as a source of cash while keeping the scheme relatively low risk. The act marks a turning point from grumbling into active criminal action.

Marty's boss Carol explains that the company receives images of checks when they are cashed and can see who is cashing them. The knowledge heightens the risk of discovery and makes Marty uneasy. He realizes the scheme could unravel soon.

Fearing pursuit, Marty retreats to Derek Skiba's basement to lay low. He avoids work and tries to keep a low profile while the threat of exposure looms. The basement becomes his makeshift hideout as the days drag on.

Days are spent gaming and stuffing himself with Mountain Dew and frozen pizzas. Marty begins crafting a weapon from steak knives and a Power Glove inspired by Freddy Krueger, signaling a deeper slide into reckless fantasy. The project is more fantasy than plan, yet it feels consequential.

Derek tells Carol that Marty is sick and can't come into work, but the lie backfires as Marty grows convinced Carol is closing in on the truth. The tension between the hiding place and the company builds. Marty becomes increasingly paranoid about being found out.

On a routine run to a convenience store, the cashier cheats him out of five dollars, and security cameras capture Marty trashing a display in anger. The footage fuels his fear that witnesses or investigators will connect him to the thefts. He worries the tape will reveal his fraud to the company he despises.

With cash running short, Marty hops a bus to Detroit, taking his modified Nintendo Power Glove with him. He stays in a hotel, spends on room service, and tends to a badly infected hand in the bathroom. The move to Detroit marks his frantic bid to elude consequences.

Marty tries to cash the remaining stolen checks at an ATM, only to discover his account has been shut down. He then goes to a payday loan provider, where the owner recognizes him from security footage. The double denial increases the urgency of getting away with any money left.

The payday loan owner confronts Marty in the back room, identifies him from the surveillance, and calls the police. Marty slashes the owner with the glove and escapes, leaving the injured man bleeding on the floor. The act is Marty's most violent moment and marks a point of no return.

Marty speaks on the phone with Derek and learns that Carol has been fired from the company. Believing this removes the link to his crime, he grows ecstatically, racing down the street. The misreading of safety fuels a reckless sprint toward an uncertain future.

Marty arrives at an electronics store window filled with TV screens showing surveillance footage. On the center display, he sees an image of himself walking away and proceeds to do so anyway. The moment seals his status as a target while he exits into the street.
