In 1982, young Albert Weinselstein joyfully celebrates his birthday. His mother surprises him with a comprehensive magic trick set from the famous illusionist Rance Holloway, sparking his interest in the world of magic.

Inspired by his new gift, Albert teams up with his classmate Anthony Mertz. Together, they create the iconic magic duo known as Burt Wonderstone and Anton Marvelton, setting the foundation for their future performances.

Burt and Anton's spectacular performances earn them a prestigious ten-year headlining spot at Bally's Hotel in Las Vegas. Their dynamic shows captivate audiences, and they quickly rise to fame in the magical community.

As their popularity grows, Burt's indulgent lifestyle and swelling ego strain his partnership with Anton. Frustrated, multiple female assistants, all named 'Nicole,' leave the duo due to Burt's behavior.

In a desperate attempt to fill the void left by departing assistants, Burt hastily recruits production assistant Jane. This decision further complicates the relationship between Burt and Anton, leading to increased tension.
