Annalisse and her mother Laura relocate back to Laura's hometown after the death of Annalisse's father and move into the home of Laura's old classmate, Clay Roff. The move pulls them into a house with old memories and unsettled tensions. The setting marks the start of supernatural hints and growing family strain.

Clay invites Annalisse and her mother to dinner at his home, where they meet his wife Danielle and daughter Heather. The gathering feels warm at first, but underlying tensions simmer beneath the surface. Annalisse senses there are secrets in this household that will soon affect her.

Annalisse starts having nightmares about a woman falling from a cliff, and she is haunted by the spirit of Mary. The dreams hint at foul play surrounding Mary's disappearance and the death of Mary's mother, Ann. The line between sleep and reality begins to blur.

Danielle's affair with Clay is revealed; she was pregnant and plotting to marry him. This motive helps explain the manipulation, cover-ups, and the push to keep Annalisse quiet. The affair connects personal ambitions to deadly consequences.

The town learns that Clay blocked out burying Mary's body by the cliff after believing she murdered her mother, and he subsequently committed suicide. The confession reshapes the sense of guilt and responsibility among the living. This past event explains much of the present danger and secrecy.

With the truth uncovered, Mary's spirit is finally at rest and thanks Annalisse for her help. The haunting dissipates as Mary awaits on the other side and vanishes. Annalisse feels relief but also a sense of closure for the first time since they moved in.
