1

Storm takeoff and near disaster

Buddy pilots a hot air balloon, confident they'll reach Mars. Cookie is terrified as a bolt of lightning streaks past, which Buddy dismisses as flatulence. A stronger bolt jolts Cookie into Buddy's arms, and the two cling to the basket as the storm intensifies.

Clouds collide in a boxing-like windstorm

The balloon is pushed by a face-shaped cloud, then hurled toward another cloud that delivers blows as if in a boxing match. The couple spins helplessly through the turbulent air, clinging to hope and each other. A rattlesnake-shaped cloud spits lightning, snapping two tethers and severing the basket.

Crash-landing into Sourtown

The basket slides on, the anchor trailing behind, until they crash toward land. A log-tossed bird is knocked loose as a gate opens to reveal a strange town. The battered basket comes apart, and Buddy and Cookie find themselves in a place called Sourtown.

Sourtown's grim rules and stocks

An official sign lists the town's grim rules: laughing, singing, dancing, and jazz are forbidden. Cookie points out to Buddy caricatures of Laurel and Hardy in stocks for simply smiling, and even a small bird is imprisoned for singing. The humorless domain contrasts with their cheerful curiosity.

Ye Pessimist's Club tune

Three men at Ye Pessimist's Club drink from a vinegar jug and mutter gloomily about life. Buddy grabs the mandolin and launches into Hey, Sailor! as Cookie dances, and birds and flowers cheer along. A policeman hears the merriment; the gloom-mongers slip away, and Buddy and Cookie are apprehended.

Before Sourpan: the lemon king

Sourpan, king of Sourland, presides with a crown of lemons and drinks sour juice, his face contorting with sourness. The officer brings Buddy and Cookie before him, and the king sentences them to spanking using a hand-cranked machine. Cookie whispers fearfully while Buddy declares, 'Leave it to me,' as he prepares to improvise.

The king's fall and the reversal

Captivated, the king smiles and rises to dance, but loses balance and topples toward the spanking machine. He falls into the contraption, while one of his men keeps the machine running, and the crowd erupts in laughter. Buddy and Cookie watch the reversal with quiet triumph.
