Gloria Winters, Joan Bennett, a chorus girl, is overjoyed when wealthy young Randy Bradford, John Hubbard, asks her to elope. Before they can run off, Randy is contacted by Mark Willows, Franchot Tone, a partner in the Wall Street firm that Randy’s father built and a trusted adviser to Randy. Willows makes one grim condition clear: if Randy elopes, he will be disinherited. This twist jolts Gloria, who quickly shifts from elation to a calculated plan.

To win Willows’ approval, Gloria schemes to prove herself through work and a letter of recommendation that could double as a marriage license in a pinch.
