Gloria Winters, Joan Bennett, a chorus girl, is overjoyed when wealthy young Randy Bradford, John Hubbard, asks her to elope. Before they can run off, Randy is contacted by Mark Willows, Franchot Tone, a partner in the Wall Street firm that Randy’s father built and a trusted adviser to Randy. Willows makes one grim condition clear: if Randy elopes, he will be disinherited. This twist jolts Gloria, who quickly shifts from elation to a calculated plan.
To win Willows’ approval, Gloria schemes to prove herself through work and a letter of recommendation that could double as a marriage license in a pinch. Without revealing her identity, she lands a job at Willows’ firm as a switchboard operator, navigating a new world of finance, ambition, and professional competition. A slip of the tongue on her part costs Willows a great deal of money, and she is fired in a swift reversal of fortune that tests her resolve and resourcefulness.
Willows coolly recalibrates, and soon he visits the apartment Gloria shares with Sally Long, Eve Arden, a fellow chorus girl who has become part of the intimate circle. The encounter softens him, and he offers Gloria her job back, which she gratefully accepts. As Gloria and Willows grow closer, their bond deepens both professionally and personally, creating a delicate triangle that quietly unsettles Randy.
Randy begins to sense the growing chemistry between Gloria and Willows and grows increasingly jealous. He pushes to join the firm as well, hoping to prove his worth and win back Gloria’s affection through ambition. Willows discovers Gloria’s true identity, yet rather than sever the relationship, he chooses a pragmatic path: he consents to the couple’s marriage to buy time and perhaps to mask his own feelings for Gloria.
The wedding day becomes a reveal of unspoken truths. As the couple moves toward vows, ghost-like figures materialize—visual personifications of each character’s inner thoughts—exposing that Randy no longer truly desires marriage, while Gloria and Willows admit a mutual attraction that dwarfs their initial motives. The ceremony falters in this surreal moment, and Randy pretends to faint to derail the union.
Seizing the distraction, Gloria and Willows seize their chance and slip away together, stepping into an uncertain future where affection has shifted the balance of power and loyalty. The film leaves us with a quiet, unvarnished look at how ambition, desire, and fear of loss can drive people to surprising choices, even when their hearts start in the right place.
