In 1977, high school dropout Eddie Adams struggles to find his place in Torrance, California. Living with his emotionally abusive mother and father, Eddie feels trapped and unfulfilled in his life.

While working at a nightclub managed by Maurice Rodriguez, Eddie meets porn filmmaker Jack Horner. Recognizing Eddie's potential, Jack auditions him by observing a sexual encounter with skater porn star Rollergirl.

Following a confrontation with his mother about his shameful love life, Eddie decides to move in with Jack in San Fernando Valley. Embracing a new life, Eddie adopts the stage name Dirk Diggler.

Dirk quickly rises to fame in the adult film industry, thanks to his striking looks and charm. He upgrades his lifestyle, acquiring a lavish home and a 'competition orange' 1977 Chevrolet Corvette.

Together with fellow adult film star Reed Rothchild, Dirk pitches innovative, action-packed porn films to Jack and financier Col James. Their ventures become hugely successful, showcasing the hedonistic lifestyle of the late 1970s disco era.

As New Year's Eve 1980 approaches, chaos erupts at one of Jack's parties. Assistant director Little Bill Thompson discovers his wife's infidelity, leading to a tragic murder-suicide that shakes the community.

Amid the chaos, Dirk and Reed begin indulging in cocaine as their careers flourish. However, Dirk's drug use eventually leads to impotence and volatile mood swings, straining his relationship with Jack.

By 1983, tensions escalate between Dirk and Jack after a heated argument regarding shooting a scene while Dirk is high. Feeling rejected, Dirk decides to pursue a music career alongside Reed and Scotty.

Dirk, Reed, and Scotty struggle to secure a recording contract in the music industry. Their attempts are met with financial barriers, pushing them further into desperation.

Meanwhile, Jack faces pressures from theater magnate Floyd Gondolli to switch his films to videotape. The disillusionment grows as Jack navigates his career's changing landscape.

In September 1983, Amber Waves faces a custody battle that jeopardizes her relationship with her child, prompted by her career choices and substance abuse issues.

Desperate for money, Dirk and Reed confront local drug dealer Rahad Jackson. This chaotic encounter culminates in tragedy when their friend Todd Parker is killed.

Amid the fallout from the drug deal gone wrong, Dirk and Jack reconcile their differences. This moment of clarity serves as a turning point for both characters.

Moving into 1984, the characters strive to confront their past mistakes. As Buck and Jessie welcome a son, Dirk and Amber aim to reclaim their footing in the adult film industry.

Determined to piece their lives back together, Dirk and his friends explore new opportunities in filmmaking. They hope to re-enter the industry and reinvigorate their careers.
