Roger Ferris, a determined CIA case officer played by Leonardo DiCaprio, finds himself immersed in a dangerous mission in Iraq, pursuing a notorious terrorist named Al-Saleem. In a gamble to gather crucial intelligence, Ferris strikes a deal with Nizar, a member of the terrorist cell, who agrees to provide information in exchange for asylum in North America. Despite the stern objections from his superior, Ed Hoffman, portrayed by Russell Crowe, Ferris decides to assist Nizar. This decision soon turns perilous when Nizar becomes a crucial link to uncovering more about his network. When Nizar is ultimately captured, Ferris faces a heart-wrenching choice and is compelled to eliminate him to safeguard his own identity.
As the plot intensifies, Ferris and his ally Bassam, played by Oscar Isaac, embark on a risky operation in Balad, Iraq. They soon find themselves in a chaotic situation when their vehicle is struck by an RPG in a fierce gunfight. While Ferris is airlifted to safety along with important evidence, Bassam tragically loses his life in the explosion. Meanwhile, a separate group of terrorists in the UK is plotting further violence, causing widespread chaos when their plans unravel.
Recovering from his injuries, Ferris is assigned to Jordan, where he teams up with Hani Salaam, the head of the Jordanian General Intelligence Directorate, portrayed by Mark Strong. The tension escalates as Hoffman discovers an Al-Saleem hideout and orders Ferris to monitor it closely while simultaneously orchestrating covert operations without Ferris’s knowledge. The dynamics shift dramatically when Ferris finds himself at odds with Hoffman’s tactics, pushing him to demand clarity and integrity over their missions.
In a twist of fate, Ferris develops feelings for Aisha, a nurse he meets while receiving treatment. The ensuing turmoil, however, continues with devastating bombings in Amsterdam that claim numerous lives. As Ferris works to infiltrate the terrorist network, he finds himself grappling with betrayal and manipulation, especially when he discovers that Hoffman has set his own plans in motion without Ferris’s consent.
After a series of missteps and a desperate attempt to save the innocent architect Omar Sadiki, who has been unwittingly embroiled in their schemes, Ferris’s life spirals further out of control. When he learns of Aisha’s abduction, he offers himself to her captors in a bid to secure her freedom. This reckless move leads to his capture by Al-Saleem, resulting in a tense clash of wills. During his time in captivity, Ferris realizes the depth of his betrayal as he confronts the reality of espionage.
Just when it seems all hope is lost, Salaam and his agents intervene, saving Ferris from his imminent execution. In a surprising turn, Salaam reveals that Aisha’s kidnapping was staged to draw out Ferris’s loyalty, and now he seeks a different path. With a heavy heart and a desire to escape the relentless cycle of deception, Ferris decides to go off the radar and reunite with Aisha, seeking solace in a world fraught with danger and mistrust.
