Douglas takes a large loan and uses Julie's earrings as collateral. The earrings are fastened to Julie and cannot be removed, so Michael is tasked with guarding Julie until the money is repaid. The scene takes place at Michael's shop in London in the late afternoon.

Julie wants to stay warm for the night. She deceives a policeman and has him arrest Michael instead. She then swipes Michael's house key and spends the night at his house.

The butler finds Julie in Michael's bed when Michael returns home with a cold. Roberta arrives and is furious when she discovers Julie in Michael's pajamas in his bed. Roberta breaks off the engagement.

Julie goes to the theatrical agency run by her supposed uncle. She removes the earrings as he praises her nighttime con. In reality, Julie is an actress and is offered a leading role in a new production.

Roberta tells her parents that the engagement is off. Rufus Trent reveals that he hired Douglas's agency to break up Michael and Roberta, and he is thrilled by the turn of events.

At Michael's workplace, Trent questions him about lending money without collateral. Mrs. Trent arrives and fixes the situation so that Roberta and Michael are engaged again.

Mrs. Trent intervenes and ensures Roberta and Michael remain engaged. The arrangement seems to restore the social match despite the earlier scheme.

Upset that the wedding is still on, Trent returns to Douglas and states that he will not pay until the engagement is broken for good. The money is part of the scheme to end the match.

A box for Michael arrives at his workplace containing his pajamas. Roberta is unhappy with the contents, and Julie is seen in the shop vault as part of the ongoing ruse.

Michael takes Julie to her hotel room and stays with her when she pretends to be sick after spending the night away. He begins to see the fragile nature of the plan.

Michael arrives late for dinner with Roberta and her friends and admits he has been with Julie. Julie arrives in glamorous form, prompting Roberta to leave. Michael resolves to keep an eye on the earrings.

Alone with Michael, Julie confesses that she was trying to break up his engagement. They share a carriage ride, where robbers threaten to cut Julie's ears to obtain the earrings. She removes the earrings and gives them to the robbers.

The police arrive when Michael recognizes one of the robbers as a waiter. The waiter tells the police that Roberta paid him to rob Julie and Michael, exposing the scheme.

In the climactic turn, Michael breaks into Julie's show and tells her that he loves her. The tangled plot is brought to a personal conclusion as their relationship shifts.
