June Delaney, a member of New York City’s upper crust, discovers that her private funds have been impounded by the British government because most of her father’s investments were made in England before World War II. To keep up her lifestyle, she decides to rent out her upscale apartment and advertises in a newspaper, drawing a response from Pedro Sullivan, a Venezuelan playboy and the sole heir to a vast American rubber empire who travels to the United States to secure a bank loan for his family’s business and needs a place to stay during negotiations. Despite the steep cost of renting the fancy flat, he cannot resist its beauty and the allure of the woman who answers his ad.
When Pedro arrives, June is dressed in an apron and he mistakes her for a servant. She doesn’t correct him, continuing to pretend that Miss Delaney is away traveling, while Pedro grows disappointed with the level of service he receives. Pedro also faces stiff resistance in his talks with Ambrose Murdock Flint, the tire magnate who insists on investing in a rubber substitute rather than the real rubber Pedro offers. In the mix, the New York representative of Flint’s side, Cordoba, misreads Pedro’s situation and wrongly assumes the loan has been granted.
That same night, the two cross paths at a club, and June tries to slip away when she recognizes him. A curious employee reveals June’s true identity to Pedro, but she remains unaware of the disclosure and still escorts him to another club, where the spark between them quietly deepens into romance. Cordoba delivers a harsh message: Pedro never secured the loan and is sent back to Venezuela, leaving both sides frustrated and confused about who told whom what.
Meanwhile, June tries to win Flint over with ideas of property she can offer him, hoping to help Pedro secure the funding. A misunderstanding grows as Pedro begins to think June is competing with him for Flint’s money, turning them briefly into adversaries. Yet at a charity event hosted by one of June’s friends, the pair reconcile, and June engineers a reunion between Pedro and Flint. The loan is finally secured, and a romantic partnership blossoms between Pedro and June. The story concludes with a light, comic sting: Pedro’s impulsive moment—accidentally flattening Flint’s car tire with a gun—gives the film a playful twist as the couple looks toward a hopeful future together.
