Black Cat, White Cat

Matko Destanov, a small-time Romani smuggler, lives in a dilapidated house by the Danube River in eastern Serbia. He is accompanied by his teenage son, Zare, who shares his father's dreams of prosperity through daring schemes.

Matko and Zare hatch an audacious plan to steal an entire train loaded with smuggled fuel. This grand theft is driven by their desire for a better life, illustrating their deep aspirations.

To finance their scheme, Matko seeks a loan from Grga Pitić, a wheelchair-bound gangster and former acquaintance of Matko's late father. This moment sets the stage for a series of unexpected events that spiral out of control.

During a meeting, Matko's partner Dadan betrays him by drugging him. This treachery allows Dadan to take over Matko's scheme and puts Matko in a precarious position where he cannot repay the loan.

Dadan demands that Zare marry his dwarf sister, Afrodita, in exchange for Matko’s freedom from the debt. This harsh ultimatum throws Zare into emotional turmoil, as he secretly loves another woman, Ida.

Zare discovers Dadan's malicious intentions and decides to rescue his grandfather, Zarije, from the hospital. He enlists the help of a local gypsy band, showcasing the unity within the Romani community.

As plans for the wedding are underway, Zarije suddenly passes away, leading to chaos. Dadan insists the wedding must go on despite the family's loss, prompting Matko and Zare to hide Zarije's body in the attic.

Ida, the barmaid and Zare's love interest, caters the wedding but is heartbroken to see Zare being forced to marry another. Her feelings reflect the emotional turmoil surrounding the impending nuptials.

During the wedding, Afrodita flees from the ceremony, leading to an unexpected meeting with Grga Veliki. Their chance encounter ignites a spark, complicating the dynamics between the characters further.

Grga Pitić, witnessing the chemistry between his grandson Grga Veliki and Afrodita, decides to support their love. He pushes Dadan to accept their union despite the earlier circumstances.

Zare, Ida, and Sujka strategize to undermine Dadan's control and protect their rights. Their collaboration signifies the resilience of the community in the face of adversity.

As the wedding festivities continue, Matko and Dadan engage in a high-stakes game of dice. Dadan's penchant for cheating creates an atmosphere of tension and comedic irony.

In a bizarre twist, both Grga Pitić and Zarije return from the dead during the wedding. This miraculous event adds to the absurdity of the ceremony and leaves everyone in shock.

Dadan has a comical mishap when he tumbles into a pit of manure. This embarrassing moment leads to the abandonment of his harem and reinforces the farcical nature of the events.

In a final act of defiance, Zare threatens the wedding official with a gun, demanding to marry Ida. The couple sails away on a riverboat, ready to start their new life with the blessings of their family.
