Big Shot’s Funeral

Don Tyler, a world-renowned director, starts shooting a remake of The Last Emperor on location in the Forbidden City, Beijing. Lucy, his assistant, hires Beijing cameraman YoYo to shoot a 'making of' documentary, establishing a metafilmic layer from the start.

Tyler discovers his health is failing and is ousted from the shoot by the producer, shifting control to others. The on-set atmosphere turns tense as the production carries on without him, adding a cloud over the project’s future.

After witnessing a Chinese funeral for the elderly, Tyler tells YoYo that he wants a 'comedy funeral' rather than a traditional somber farewell. He imagines a celebration that would mock despair and redefine the send-off. This strange wish sets the tonal direction for the events to come.

Shortly after, the American director collapses into a coma, leaving his fate uncertain. The medical emergency prompts the hospital to take over while the project lurches forward in limbo.

The doctor informs the family that Tyler's life is irreversible and they should begin preparing the funeral. Tony, the Japanese producer, designates YoYo as the sole decision-maker for the funeral, consolidating control over the event.

YoYo assumes responsibility for the funeral planning with a chivalrous, proactive attitude. He enlists Louis Wang, a classmate who runs a performance company, to bring in expertise and resources, and Louis promises commission for the favorable arrangement.

News of Tyler's death becomes a rare business opportunity for Tony and Louis, while Youyou and Lucy handle the emotions. The plan is a rich and colorful program designed to resemble televised galas, broadcast to the world.

Even the funeral's 3 million in expenses are precarious, as advertisers push to control the event. The plan treats Tyler's body as a moving advertising carrier, with products and brands eager to attach themselves to the spectacle.

Lucy visits Tyler in the hospital ward and is shocked to find he has risen from death. Tony and Tyler agree to block the news, letting the 'performance' continue while the world remains unaware.

During the advertising auction, funeral advertisements reach record prices and Tyler's solemn portrait becomes a rolling promotional centerpiece. The event looks more like a branding showcase than a funeral, with cigars and tension between key players marking the mood.

News of Tyler's recovery pours over the event like cold water, destabilizing the elaborate plan. Louis is unable to cope and experiences a mental breakdown, while Youyou pretends to be ill and ends up admitted to a mental hospital.

In the aftermath, Youyou and Lucy deepen their understanding of each other and realize their love, providing a human counterpoint to the spectacle. The film ends with the two embracing, offering a hopeful close to the chaotic journey.
