During the chaos of the 1947 Partition of India, a desperate family finds themselves boarding a train towards safety. Among them is Gautam Kumar (Jackie Shroff) and his family, who are fleeing from the terrifying riots. In the turmoil, Gautam’s young son, Bharat (Salman Khan), who is only 8 years old, tragically loses his baby sister, Gudiya (Tabu). Despite the looming danger, Gautam bravely decides to remain behind to search for her, urging his son to take his mother and younger siblings to his aunt’s store, which deals in imported goods. Just before they part ways, Gautam makes Bharat promise to keep the family united in his absence.
At his aunt Jamuna’s place, portrayed by Ayesha Raza Mishra, they find shelter, although her husband, Keemat (Kumud Mishra), is not very welcoming. Growing up too fast, Bharat takes on various odd jobs to support his family. By 1964, as a pre-teen, he discovers The Great Russian Circus alongside his best friend, Vilayati (Sunil Grover). Over the years, he becomes a star attraction, enchanting audiences and forming a romantic bond with Radha (Disha Patani). However, his circus journey ends abruptly when his younger brother, Chote (Shashank Arora), suffers an accident trying to imitate him.
As time rolls on, Bharat’s sister, Mehek (Kashmira Irani), becomes of marriageable age. Fast forward to the mid-1970s, Bharat takes part in the Indian migration spurred by the oil boom in the Gulf region, hoping to earn enough to support his family back home. Here, he meets the ambitious chief engineer Kumud Raina (Katrina Kaif), and their relationship flourishes despite a perilous mining accident that Bharat survives. As Kumud expresses her deep feelings for him, Bharat hesitates to commit, fearing it would betray his father’s wishes, and leaves Saudi Arabia when his visa expires.
Back in India, Kumud arrives during Mehek’s wedding to share her love for Bharat, even accepting a live-in relationship, which his mother agrees to. Years pass, and tragedy strikes when Bharat’s aunt dies in 1983. Concerned for their future, his uncle decides to sell the goods store, a decision Bharat vehemently opposes. Determined to save it, he departs once more with Vilayati to work as sailors, during which Vilayati finds love in Suzan (Nora Fatehi) in Malta, where they bravely fend off a pirate threat. After eight months at sea, Bharat returns and successfully buys the store, managing it through the 1990s amidst India’s social transformations.
During this period, Kumud becomes a creative director at the newly launched Zee TV, running a heartfelt show designed to reunite families separated during the Partition. Bharat appears on the program, hoping to find Gudiya and his father. A woman from London, adopted during the era of turmoil and played by Tabu, comes forth, leading Bharat to realize she is his long-lost sister. An emotional reunion takes place as Gudiya travels to India. However, Bharat’s mother passes away shortly after this joyous moment, leaving him more determined to discover his father, though his efforts yield no results.
In present times, the now-elderly Bharat finally contemplates selling his aunt’s store, an emotional decision he has long resisted despite its financial decline. His father’s earlier promise to reunite with the family at the store weighs heavily on his heart, which is why he has clung to it for so long. As he grapples with the realization that his father may indeed be gone, Gautam’s spirit visits him, affirming that Bharat has fulfilled his promise to keep the family together. Having been granted this closure, Bharat finally sheds his tears, letting go of the past before he walks away from the store. In the poignant closing scene, he chooses to embrace his future with Kumud, signifying a new chapter in his life filled with hope and love.
