When the gentle and affable Bernie Tiede II stepped into his role as the assistant director at the Hawthorne Funeral Home in the quaint rural community of Carthage, Texas, the townspeople were unsure of what to make of him. The local barber affectionately described him as “peachy and sweet,” while some of the men who frequented Leon Choate’s barber-and-gunsmith shop debated whether Bernie was perhaps a little eccentric.

However, it didn’t take long for Bernie to win the hearts of Carthage’s residents with his consistently kind demeanor and, more importantly, his exceptional talent for crafting beautiful funeral services. One local was quoted as saying that “with Bernie doing your service, you just knew you were going to get to heaven.” His unique ability to celebrate the lives of the deceased endeared him to many in the town.

One fateful afternoon, Bernie organized the funeral for Rod Nugent, a wealthy oilman and the chairman of Carthage’s only bank. It was at this event that he encountered Marjorie Nugent, the town’s imperious matriarch who was generally disliked for her haughty attitude. Despite her unpopularity, Bernie began visiting her frequently after the funeral, offering his compassionate company. Before long, Mrs. Nugent began relying on him for errands, inviting him for lunches and dinners, and asking him to accompany her on various outings.

However, the story took a dark turn in August 1997, when Marjorie Nugent was shockingly found dead, having been shot four times in the back and hidden under frozen food in her garage freezer. The strangest aspect of the case was that Marjorie had been deceased for nine months before anyone realized she was missing. A local resident noted that “no one really cared about looking for her because no one missed her.” The intrigue deepened when authorities announced that Bernie was the murderer, revealing a twist as he had been using her wealth to support the community, including a generous donation of $100,000 in Marjorie’s name to construct a new Sunday school building at the Methodist church.

In a striking show of loyalty, the townsfolk rallied in Bernie’s support following his arrest. Even in the face of his confession to the crime, residents took to their cars, honking their horns in a plea to the local District Attorney, urging him not to prosecute their cherished assistant director of the funeral home. The complex and unexpected nature of Bernie’s story captivated the nation and highlighted the intricacies of community relationships in the often surprising setting of Carthage, Texas.
