The film unfolds with Scott P. Harris as he embarks on a deeply personal exploration of the world of redheads, revealing insights as a redhead himself. Despite having numerous female friends, he is yet to meet anyone who truly appreciates the uniqueness of his hair color. Out of curiosity, Scott ventures to a local park with his camera, aiming to engage women in conversation about their opinions on redheads.
As he makes his first encounter, he’s taken aback when a woman expresses her genuine admiration for redheads, leading him into a light-hearted romantic comedy situation as he tries to charm her. He leans on his reliable friend and co-editor, Ben, for advice in his pursuit. However, despite securing a date, things don’t go as planned.
Throughout the film, Scott’s dedicated camerawoman continuously encourages him to consider dating a redhead, but he adamantly refuses. Initially, he argues that redheads seldom date one another, later admitting to an underlying self-loathing that makes him project his insecurities onto every redhead he meets.
In a moment of desperation, Scott explores online dating services supposedly tailored for redheads and their admirers. When he discovers these platforms to be scams, he resorts to wearing a sandwich board in a public space with the bold proclamation: “Looking 4 a woman who likes gingers. Seriously.” This act of vulnerability leads to a particularly brutal encounter with someone who insults his appearance, calling redheads unattractive, which ignites Scott’s introspection.
He opens up about his painful childhood experiences, recalling relentless bullying during second grade, and the harsh teacher’s threats to punish him if he showed any emotion. This traumatic period has left a lasting impact, shaping his views and interactions with the world around him.
As his inner journey progresses, Scott learns about The Redhead Days, the world’s largest gathering of redheads held annually in the Netherlands. Motivated by his story, he decides to share his graduation project film with the festival founders, who then invite him to screen his work at the event.
Once in the lively atmosphere of the Netherlands, Scott experiences a sense of being embraced by the community, shedding the anguish that once defined his life. This chapter marks a turning point, filling him with newfound confidence and a refreshing perspective. Amidst the adoration and excitement, he encounters a stunning redhead who has traveled from across the ocean solely for the festival’s allure. As their attraction blossoms, it becomes evident that both are on the brink of something significant. The anticipation of their first official date looms, opening up a world of possibilities for love and connection.
