Dozens of bears crowd the streams and rivers in pursuit of the best catches, with the Great Falls area becoming a key gathering spot where only adult males are allowed to feed at the main flow. The elevated competition between Magnus and Chinook intensifies as the season progresses. Sky, meanwhile, seeks a quieter path to sustenance at the hidden sanctuary known as the Golden Pond, a place where the family can eat more peacefully while the riverine bounty surges. After savoring mussels and rock eels washed ashore, the cubs experience their first tastes of salmon as they move upriver. A raven’s guiding shadow leads Sky and her cubs toward the Golden Pond—an essential stop that arrives just in time to spare the family from starvation. With renewed vigor, they eventually make their way back toward Katmai, ready to continue their journey north to Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, where the Golden Pond awaits and the salmon are plentiful.

The family’s feast at the pond serves as a turning point that strengthens their bond and skills as they head back to Katmai as winter nears. When the first snow falls, the bears retreat to the mountains, retreating to their dens to weather the cold and long nights. Throughout this demanding first year, Sky, Scout, Amber, and their seasonal neighbors learn vital lessons about resilience, cooperation, and the rhythms of a landscape that both tests and teaches them.
