In Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska, a brown bear mother named Sky welcomes two cubs, Scout and Amber, into the world inside her den perched on a shaded mountain slope. As spring unfurls, the trio steps into the open, facing the first tests of a season where avalanches loom as a constant threat they must cleverly dodge. Their early days are a blend of careful exploration and close family coordination, with Sky guiding and protecting her youngsters while they learn the basics of movement, safety, and curiosity in a world that can turn harsh in an instant.

Once they reach the lush valley below, the cubs encounter other bears, some of whom carry danger and tension into their spring. Among these residents are Magnus, a formidable, dominant male who controls the valley, and his rival Chinook, an older male who poses his own risks. The family’s strength comes from their unity, and Sky remains vigilant to shield Scout and Amber from Tikaani, a lone wolf who adds a recurring challenge to their day-to-day survival. Through a mix of play, observation, and quick learning, the cubs begin to understand how to defend themselves and navigate the shifting balance of power around them, all while choosing to steer clear of the frequent clashes between Magnus and Chinook.

Spring also becomes a season of practical lessons in hunting. Sky leads the cubs to mudflats where clams lie buried beneath the sand, teaching them how to uncover food with patience and teamwork. The family shares moments of joy and plenty, until the tide’s return turns the scene chaotic. Scout finds himself stranded on a sandbar, and Sky’s instinctive concern gives way to decisive action as Scout struggles to free himself. He finally regains his senses, swallows his fear, and swims back to Sky. The family regroups and heads toward higher ground, but not long after, another confrontation erupts: Magnus asserts his dominance, and Chinook launches another attack. Sky fights to protect the cubs, while Amber and Scout retreat into a nearby log for safety. When Chinook is driven off, Amber reappears, but Scout has vanished from view. Sky searches all day in a hopeful, anxious vigil, and just as hope begins to fade, Scout emerges from the log where he had been hiding all along, bringing relief to the family.

As summer arrives, the annual salmon run fills the waterways with opportunity and risk. Dozens of bears crowd the streams and rivers in pursuit of the best catches, with the Great Falls area becoming a key gathering spot where only adult males are allowed to feed at the main flow. The elevated competition between Magnus and Chinook intensifies as the season progresses. Sky, meanwhile, seeks a quieter path to sustenance at the hidden sanctuary known as the Golden Pond, a place where the family can eat more peacefully while the riverine bounty surges. After savoring mussels and rock eels washed ashore, the cubs experience their first tastes of salmon as they move upriver. A raven’s guiding shadow leads Sky and her cubs toward the Golden Pond—an essential stop that arrives just in time to spare the family from starvation. With renewed vigor, they eventually make their way back toward Katmai, ready to continue their journey north to Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, where the Golden Pond awaits and the salmon are plentiful.

The family’s feast at the pond serves as a turning point that strengthens their bond and skills as they head back to Katmai as winter nears. When the first snow falls, the bears retreat to the mountains, retreating to their dens to weather the cold and long nights. Throughout this demanding first year, Sky, Scout, Amber, and their seasonal neighbors learn vital lessons about resilience, cooperation, and the rhythms of a landscape that both tests and teaches them. By the time winter gives way to another cycle of seasons, the cubs have absorbed hard-won knowledge that will shape their lives for years to come.
