The tale is told by Narrator Natalie Portman and centers on Echo, a young bottlenose dolphin who is full of energy and mischief but not yet ready to grow up. In the reefs near a cluster of French Polynesian islands in the South Pacific, Echo lives with his mother, Kumu, who patiently guides him toward finding his own food and becoming independent, even as he clings to his playful nature.
As Echo and his pod prepare to settle into their coral reef home, Echo’s neighbor, Mr. Mantis, a dedicated peacock mantis shrimp, wrestles with keeping his coral piles intact while others disturb his garden. One remarkable night, Echo is visited by a female humpback whale named Mo’orea, who has traveled long distances to find a protector for her newborn daughter, Fluke. Fluke is tentative about Echo at first, but she soon warms to him, and a budding friendship forms between them.
Kumu, ever protective, calls Echo back for straying too far from home, reminding him of the responsibilities that come with knowing how to survive the ocean. Yet the bond between Echo and Mo’orea’s family deepens as Mo’orea calls upon the support of the most formidable male humpbacks to safeguard Fluke. The biggest among them becomes a steadfast guardian, winning the respect and affection of Mo’orea and Fluke in the process.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mantis faces new challenges as his coral garden is threatened; a colony of green humphead parrotfish arrives to sweep away debris and lend a hand, while a cuttlefish confronts a crab near his home. The sea grows tense when a pod of killer whales arrives, prompting Mo’orea to connect with the male humpbacks for a rescue operation to protect Fluke. The vigilant leader drives off the danger and earns the trust and admiration of Mo’orea and Fluke.
Night falls, and Echo and his pod encounter a rival dolphin pod. The clash leaves Echo separated and adrift in the dark seas, sparking a tense, hours-long search by his family. A patient sea turtle guides Echo toward the surface to breathe, and he survives the night before reuniting with Kumu. In gratitude and learning, Kumu teaches Echo how to hunt fish, guiding him to create a muddy ring with her tail to trap prey. Echo bravely imitates the technique, and the pod shares a successful meal together.
Back at Coral Reef, Echo’s courage is tested again when Mr. Mantis is threatened by the cuttlefish. Echo comes to the rescue, proving that his experiences and training have altered him from a playful youngster into a capable protector of those he loves. The lessons of the ocean—trust, resilience, and cooperation—shape Echo’s growing understanding of survival and community.
Mo’orea and Fluke eventually begin a new life with the large male who fathers Fluke, and Mr. Mantis continues to enjoy his pile of coral with renewed vigor. Echo and Fluke become inseparable friends as they grow, sharing adventures and supporting one another as their families flourish. In the end, Echo’s journey—from a wayward youngster to a thoughtful survivor—highlights the balance between family, friendship, and the wider world beneath the waves.
