In 1946, Lady Mary Craven visits an American orphanage and explains an exchange program that would bring a child to England to stay at Misselthwaite Manor. She speaks of a secret, magical garden that responds to love. Lizzie Buscana volunteers to participate so she can see the garden for herself.

Lizzie travels to England to join the program and is met at the train station by Martha Sowerby, who runs Misselthwaite Manor. She learns the children are under strict rules about the garden and their behavior. This marks the beginning of her new life at Misselthwaite.
