Thorton Melon is introduced as a prosperous businessman known for his nationwide clothing stores that cater to plus-sized individuals. Despite his towering achievements, he comes from a modest background and was never a college student.

During a meeting with his executives, Thorton receives a call from his son, Jason, who is studying at Grand Lakes University. Thorton inquires about Jason's college experience, unaware that Jason is not part of a fraternity and is only the diving team's towel boy.

At a fancy dinner hosted by his second wife Vanessa, Thorton realizes that the guests are only interested in free food and donations. He discovers Vanessa in a compromising position with another man, Giorgio, and confronts her about their affair.

After his discovery of Vanessa's affair, Thorton confides in his aide Lou, sharing his regrets about how this affects his relationship with Jason. Determined to rebuild their bond, Thorton decides to surprise Jason with a visit to college.

Thorton mistakenly arrives at a sorority house while looking for Jason, only to learn that his son is neither part of a fraternity nor the diving team. Jason admits feeling isolated and unsuccessful, prompting Thorton to consider enrolling in college himself.

Once enrolled, both Thorton and Jason take classes with Professor Barbay. Thorton frequently challenges Barbay's points during discussions about building fictional companies, creating a unique dynamic in the classroom.

Thorton finds himself enamored with Diane, a literature professor, despite her relationship with Barbay. Diana is attracted to Thorton's carefree attitude, sparking a romantic interest amidst the academic chaos.

During a confrontation involving Jason's roommate Derek and the football team, Thorton jumps in to defend Derek, which escalates into a chaotic brawl. This incident further ingrains Thorton into the college life that Jason is experiencing.

Thorton reconnects with the diving coach who had originally recognized his talents years ago. Learning that Jason failed his dive audition, Thorton encourages him to perform a challenging dive to showcase his skill.

As Thorton immerses himself in college life, he revels in the parties and socializing but struggles to keep up with the academic workload. In his pursuit of easing his burdens, he devises a plan to hire experts for his assignments, which frustrates Jason.

Jason earns a spot on the diving team, which heightens tension between him and Thorton. Jason starts to suspect Thorton of using his influence for personal advantages, creating a rift in their relationship.

During a large party at the revamped dorm, Diane catches Thorton in a compromising situation with several young women. Her disappointment grows when she later evaluates a literature paper he submitted, feeling he lacks depth in his understanding.

Faced with mounting pressure and accusations of academic misconduct, Thorton contemplates quitting. However, with support from Jason and friends, he perseveres through a challenging exam, ultimately succeeding against all odds.

On the day of the Grand Lakes diving team's competition, Thorton performs his legendary Triple Lindy dive to help turn the tide in Jason's match. Following the victory, Diane reveals Thorton’s mixed exam results, with one surprising A from her class.

In a heartwarming culmination of his journey, Thorton is invited to address the graduating class. He delivers a humorous yet enlightening speech, inspiring the students to embrace their college journey and pursue success with a smile.
