Babay (2014) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Babay steals the egg to keep its wish-granting power out of the hands of the Witch, Serpent Horynich, and Vii, who are all racing to claim it. By seizing the egg himself, Babay controls who benefits from the Alkonost's magic and sets off the chaotic chain of pursuits that drives the story in Babay.

Each competitor in Babay wanted the Alkonost egg for a different wish: the Witch longed for a daughter, the Serpent Horynich desired bodies for his multiple heads, and Vii coveted a fortune of diamonds. Their competing greed is what triggers the dangerous race that Babay interrupts.

Foreshadowing: The Witch's wish for a daughter foreshadows the arrival of Svitlanka-Zoryanka later in the story.

When Babay confronts the chyort sent to retrieve the stolen egg, he overpowers and captures him instead of returning the egg. During the scuffle, the egg tumbles into a nearby well, deepening the chaos and sending the magic on an unexpected path through the world of Babay.

Foreshadowing: The egg falling into the well foreshadows Svitlanka-Zoryanka's miraculous, waterborne birth at the grandparents' house.

After defeating the chyort at the well, Babay gives him a paradoxical order: to search for Babay himself. This cunning move keeps the chyort trapped in an impossible task and out of the Witch's plans, freeing Babay to pursue his own goals with the egg in Babay.

After the egg tumbled into the well during the fight between Babay and the chyort, it traveled magically to the home of a loving elderly couple. This unexpected detour is what allows the egg to hatch into a baby girl in Babay, instead of remaining in the hands of any of the original competitors.

Foreshadowing: The story opens by promising the egg grants a single wish, hinting that the grandparents receiving it will produce something extraordinary.

Svitlanka-Zoryanka's rapid growth is the direct result of being born from the Alkonost's magic egg. Because the egg is said to grant any wish and carries powerful enchantments, the child who hatches from it ages from a baby into a teenage girl in about a week in Babay.

Foreshadowing: The opening claim that the egg grants any wish sets up the miracle of her unnatural aging.

Babay kidnaps Svitlanka-Zoryanka because she is the living product of the Alkonost's magic egg, and he wants to keep that wish-granting potential under his control. Taking her to his hidden lair forces her to escape and begin the journey that forms the heart of Babay.

Foreshadowing: Babay's earlier obsession with possessing the egg foreshadows his interest in claiming anything that comes from it.

After being taken by Babay, Svitlanka-Zoryanka realizes that the grandparents who raised her are not her biological family and that her true origin lies with the magic egg. Her quest to find her real parents becomes her main motivation after escaping in Babay.

When the travelers meet Snake Horynich, who tries to block their way, they rely on cleverness rather than force. By solving his riddles together, they prove their wit and courage, which is what allows them to pass through his territory safely in Babay.

Foreshadowing: The Witch's earlier mention of Horynich as a rival for the egg foreshadows the travelers running into him later on the road.

The story strongly implies that Svitlanka-Zoryanka is the physical manifestation of the egg's wish-granting power. She hatches from it, grows unnaturally fast, and embodies the magic that the Witch, Horynich, and Vii were all fighting to control in Babay.

Foreshadowing: The Witch's stated wish for a daughter makes Svitlanka-Zoryanka a possible answer to that desire.

The storyteller reveals his true identity as Babay to deliver a mischievous, slightly eerie twist at the end of Babay. By breaking the wall between fiction and reality, he frightens the children listening to him and makes them realize the tale they just heard was not as safe as it seemed.

Foreshadowing: His unusually detailed knowledge of Babay's actions hints throughout the tale that he is more than a simple narrator.
