At Play in the Fields of the Lord

Moon and Wolf crash-land after their plane runs out of fuel, leaving them stranded in the deep Brazilian Amazon. They must cope with limited resources while they figure out their next move.

The local police commander offers a grim bargain: if Moon and Wolf bomb the Niaruna village to drive them off, they'll receive enough fuel to leave. Moon hesitates about killing innocents, but the desperate escape plan tempts him.

Born-again evangelists Martin Quarrier and his wife Hazel arrive with their son Billy to spread the gospel. They meet fellow missionaries Leslie and Andy Huben and settle into the outpost at Mãe de Deus.

Moon and Wolf prepare to strike the Niaruna from the air, but Moon's firsthand view of the community and an arrow fire prompt him to reconsider. The plane aborts the mission and returns to Mãe de Deus.

That night, Moon takes a native drug and experiences a hallucinatory awakening. He then abandons the plan, flies to the Niaruna village, and parachutes in.

Moon is welcomed by the Niaruna as Kisu-Mu, a divine figure, and begins to adapt to their life and culture. He commits to living among the tribe and shedding his former identity.

The four evangelists travel upriver to establish their mission among the Niaruna. Native converts who had previously accepted Catholic gifts appear and await the Niaruna arrival.

Billy dies of blackwater fever, a severe malaria complication, and Hazel's sanity collapses as a result. She is returned to Mãe de Deus while Martin grapples with grief.

Moon encounters Andy while she swims nude and they share a kiss. Moon contracts a cold and returns to the Niaruna village, unknowingly infecting many of the tribe with illness.

Moon and the tribe's leaders beg the missionaries for drugs. Leslie refuses, but Martin agrees to provide the necessary medicines, intensifying the ethical dilemma and crisis.

In the village, after Martin speaks with Moon, helicopters arrive to begin bombing the Niaruna. The attack foregrounds the collapse of Moon's godlike disguise.

Martin survives the bombing but is killed soon after by his own helper, marking a brutal turn in the mission's unraveling and the collapse of the Quarrier family's influence.

Moon is exposed as a man and not a god, shattering his status within the Niaruna. He flees the village and ends up alone, unable to maintain the illusion he once embodied.
