In the 1950s, Africo, a remote village in the Aspromonte valley, faces tragedy when a woman dies during childbirth due to the delayed arrival of a doctor. Isolated by its lack of roads, the villagers, including children, unite to construct their own connection to the outside world. Giulia, a new schoolteacher from the North, arrives with the goal of promoting cultural unity through standard Italian. However, she encounters resistance from the local mafia boss, Don Totó, who seeks to maintain the town's isolation and his control.
