Fontamara, a remote Marsica village, houses poor peasants called ‘cafoni’. Berardo Viola wants to marry Elvira, but must first earn enough money to buy land, so he plans to go to the city. After fascist soldiers rape Maria Grazia, Berardo and Antonio go to Rome, are cheated by a lawyer, invited by an antifascist, and arrested for subversive papers.
