Ashes to Ashes

Ashes to Ashes unfolds in London, following Gabriel Darbeaux, a young screenwriter and martial arts enthusiast who also supplements his income by escorting wealthy women. The film opens with a feverish dream: Gabriel is chased by a group of Triad thugs armed with swords, sticks, and nunchaku. He fights back with his own nunchaku, only to wake and realize it was an early morning dream. That vision seeds the opening scene of his latest Ashes to Ashes, a thriller that braids the Italian Mafia, Chinese Triads, and a heavy dose of martial arts mayhem.

Gabriel clings to the belief that this script could buy him financial independence, even as his best friend Michael envisions something darker—an escort agency of his own. To fund his own ambitions, Michael engages in secret recordings of his sexual encounters with a banker’s wife, hoping to extract £100,000 through blackmail.

A call pulls Gabriel toward an exclusive West End restaurant to meet a regular client who never arrives. Instead, he meets the stunning Arabella Simone, who drags him into a world that eerily mirrors his screenplay. Arabella is the former mistress of Valentino Tarantola, a possessive Italian gangster who keeps his power by employing the clandestine “Laundrymen” Muhammed and Nelson. When Valentino is apparently castrated and left for dead at Arabella’s apartment, she flees and seeks Gabriel’s help, with the Laundrymen closing in.

Michael is summoned to drive them toward a main-line station and a hoped-for escape to France, but their plans collapse when they are captured by the Laundrymen and hauled to a warehouse. There, Enrico Tarontola, Valentino’s sadistic younger brother, accuses Arabella of killing Valentino and Michael of blackmailing a financial advisor’s wife. The three—and Gabriel—face a brutal, imminent death.

Suddenly, the warehouse erupts in violence as henchmen loyal to a rival Triad boss storm the scene. In the ensuing melee, Gabriel is forced to defend himself against Triad enforcers and Mafia hitmen. The action erupts in a dizzying blend of gritty combat and shadowed corridors, where fear sharpens every decision and loyalties fray under pressure. When dawn arrives, Gabriel wakes from the nightmare, leaving him to wonder where dream ends and reality begins, and how the violently cinematic world he’s been writing might have seeped into his own life. The ending lingers on the blurred line between the filmmaker’s fiction and the world he’s trying to survive, offering a haunting meditation on imagination, danger, and the cost of chasing independence.
