During a severe famine in Yuri's village, Kenji dies of hunger. To survive and avoid further suffering, Kenji's family secretly cooks his body into a stew. Yuri unknowingly eats her brother, discovering the horrifying truth only after completing the meal. This traumatic revelation triggers her transformation into a Wrath, with one horn beginning to sprout before Gudo intervenes.

Earlier, Yuri's desperate search for Kenji in Another World establishes the emotional weight of their separation, making her ignorance of his fate more tragic.

A Seed of Evil is a dark manifestation that grows inside a person when unresolved resentments accumulate. The resentments form tangled ropes within the soul, and if these knots multiply, they birth a Seed. If the Seed sprouts fully, the person transforms into a Wrath, a powerful, destructive being consumed by wrath. The Seed begins as a small growth and can only be plucked before the horns of a Wrath emerge.

Gudo's initial research into why Seeds take root establishes this as the central mystery driving his journey.

In Another World, souls prepare for reincarnation at a waterfall where memories drift away, turning into ropes. The soul then enters a new life, but unresolved resentments can create Seeds that carry across lifetimes. Those born with Seeds are destined to become Wraths unless their Seed is plucked. Mother Earth reveals that a soul must reincarnate for a thousand years before emerging free of a Seed.

The Goddess hints at the cyclical nature of existence early in the film, suggesting souls return repeatedly.

Gor's Seed of Evil grows due to accumulated resentsments: her father's death in battle, her uncle's revelations about his possible suicide, the neglect she suffered, and whispered accusations of guilt. These emotional wounds allow her Seed to sprout fully, transforming her into the feared Ghost Princess Wrath who destroys Flower City. Gudo's glimpse of the moments before her father's death further destabilizes her.

During the King's funeral, Gudo observes Goran's Seed emerging as she confronts disturbing truths about her father.

Gudo made a pact with the Goddess millennia ago, carrying a personal resentment that created tens of thousands of tangled ropes of resentment throughout Another World. These ropes eventually incapacitated the Goddess herself. The only way to undo this tangle was for Gudo to resolve his own long-held resentment, which he finally does by revealing his secret to Dark Sky.

Gudo's persistent curiosity about Seeds throughout the film hints at his deeper personal connection to the problem.

During Yuri's final reincarnation as Ying, Nana's death in a factory accident triggers Ying's Wrath transformation. Gudo and Dark Sky battle to subdue her, and Gudo restrains Ying at great cost, taking a fatal wound that leads to his death. This sacrifice fulfills his thousand-year vow to protect Yuri's future selves and allows her final Seed to be plucked peacefully.

Gudo's agreement to oversee Yuri's thousand-year reincarnations, on pain of death if he fails, foreshadows this ultimate sacrifice.

These characters are all reincarnations of the same soul that began with Yuri. After Kenji's death and Yuri's traumatic Wrath transformation, Mother Earth explains Yuri must reincarnate for a thousand years to be free of her Seed. Goran and Keung are revealed as intermediate reincarnations during this cycle. Ying is Yuri's final incarnation, and Hardy, the boy she saves, is Kenji's reincarnation, completing their journey.

The revelation that Goran and Keung appear as Yuri's reincarnations at the waterfall shows the interconnected nature of these souls.

Dark Sky understands the danger of a fully-formed Wrath and believes the safest course is to kill Goran before her Seed can sprout into full Wrath form with horns. He pushes Gudo to allow the killing, arguing that once she becomes a Wrath, she will be nearly impossible to stop and will devastate the world. Gudo ultimately tricks Dark Sky by faking Goran's decapitation.

Dark Sky's earlier encounter with the Ghost Hand, who became a Wrath and slaughtered his own people, hardens his stance on preemptive elimination.

The Ghost Hand was once a figure who sought to save his people but allowed his Seed to fully sprout, transforming into a Wrath. In this state, he slaughtered everyone, including his own daughter, whoever tried to stop him. Dark Sky reveals this story to illustrate the catastrophic danger of allowing a Wrath to fully form, which motivates Keung to ultimately renounce becoming a Wrath.

The Ghost Hand's tale demonstrates the film's central tragedy: even well-intentioned people can become instruments of destruction.

After learning the Ghost Hand's tragic story and witnessing Duan's death, a friend who became a Wrath, Keung is profoundly shaken. The loss of a friend who chose the Wrath path convinces him that such power brings only destruction. Gudo plucks Keung's Seed before it can fully sprout, allowing him to die as a human rather than become another tragic Wrath.

Keung's initial desire to become a Wrath to protect his village's harvest represents the tempting but destructive solution the film ultimately rejects.

After resolving his resentment and freeing the Goddess from the tangle, Gudo is offered the choice to reincarnate. Choosing rebirth, he dissolves into the cycle of reincarnation and is born as a newborn baby in Ying's industrial city. This represents his final act of sacrifice, losing all memories of Another World to begin anew, while Yuri and Dark Sky watch over him from the Goddess's realm.

Gudo's earlier statement that he would protect Yuri's future selves foreshadows this cyclical return to life.

Ying, Yuri's final reincarnation during the Industrial Revolution, is a child laborer in a factory. When her protector Nana dies in a brutal industrial accident, the emotional trauma triggers Ying's Wrath transformation. Her Seed sprouts fully, and she becomes violent before Dark Sky and Gudo manage to subdue her, though Gudo dies from his wounds sustained in the fight.

Yuri's original Wrath transformation after discovering she ate Kenji established the pattern that resurfaces in each incarnation.

Flower City falls after Goran fully transforms into the Ghost Princess Wrath, destroying the city in her wrathful rampage. Decades later, the ruined settlement becomes Wheat Village under Nyer's oppressive control. The once-thriving kingdom is reduced to farmland worked by peasants, while the legend of the Ghost Princess becomes a symbol of the people's fear and guilt.

Gudo's warning about Goran's potential to destroy everything if her Seed fully sprouted foreshadows this complete collapse.
