Anniversary

The night of the Taylor anniversary is meant to be a brief respite, but the celebration quickly turns into the final act of the total‑itarian movement known as “The Change.”

Elizabeth’s husband Josh has become a charismatic mouthpiece for the regime, and their infant child is already a symbol of its future. When the party is in full swing, a sudden explosion rocks the headquarters of the Cumberland Company in Washington. The film then reveals that the blast was caused by the youngest Taylor, Birdie, who had slipped inside the company as an intern and chosen to become a suicide bomber. Her sacrifice is the ultimate, desperate protest against a system that has already taken away her parents’ jobs, her sister Cynthia’s marriage, and her older sister Anna’s freedom.

Soon after the detonation, an unexpected guest arrives: Anna, disguised as a clown, who has been living in hiding with the underground resistance. She rushes to find her sister Birdie’s note, falls into a hysterical embrace with Ellen and Paul, and tries to shield them from the arriving troops. In the chaos, Cynthia, driven to the brink, lunges at Josh, stabbing him in the stomach before being shot herself by the soldiers. The military then drags Ellen and Paul out of the house, covering their faces—an image that mirrors the Magritte painting they first admired together—while labeling them “accomplices” for harboring a rebel.

The closing moments leave the audience with the Taylor family in ruins. Birdie and Cynthia are dead; Anna is taken away, presumably to be silenced; Josh is hauled off, bleeding, after being betrayed by the very movement he helped build. Ellen and Paul, faces hidden, are led to an uncertain fate—imprisonment, perhaps execution—while the authoritarian regime tightens its grip.
