Yet the four Taylor women remain cool toward Liz and her book, which is sponsored by the Cumberland Corporation. The household frictions deepen as Liz grants Birdie a password to a notable virology database, a gesture that unsettles Ellen, who later becomes entangled in a viral moment when a video of her vandalizing a neighbor’s Change flag goes public and sparks a broader public reaction.

The next year, Ellen loses her Georgetown position as a totalitarian Change society increasingly takes hold. Anna is beaten for ridiculing the Change movement at a show and goes into hiding. Birdie’s journalist-student boyfriend Moses, portrayed by Sky Yang, drops by but feels threatened by Josh’s reference to a dismembered journalist and leaves. Liz offers Birdie a job at Cumberland studying virology, a prospect that deeply unsettles Ellen, who even threatens Liz at one point. Rob Thompson’s path diverges from his prior life when he joins the Change, and Cynthia reveals a painful secret about her pregnancy—she had an abortion, a decision borne out of fear for what the world might become.

A year later, census-taker enumerators arrive, asking questions and presenting photos that target Anna’s whereabouts and Birdie’s protests. Ellen capitulates to endorse the Change, a decision that provokes Birdie to speak of betrayal and sisterhood torn apart. The tension escalates to a breaking point at the Taylors’ 30th anniversary party. Liz, dressed in red as Ellen once did, asks Ellen to help with Josh’s mysterious behavior; Ellen, overwhelmed, slaps Liz. Josh and Liz invite Ellen and Paul to dance to a favorite song, and a clown unexpectedly arrives—the clown is Anna, who meets Cynthia in a tense moment that leaves the family feeling unmoored.

Then the news arrives: a horrific bio-weapon attack at Cumberland’s Washington, D.C. headquarters, where Birdie works. Birdie appears on television and performs a suicide bombing, shattering the family’s sense of safety and decency. Ellen and Paul are left devastated; Anna joins them in their grief. In the chaos that follows, Cynthia fatally wounds Josh with a knife, and she escapes the house as police open fire. The officers also shoot at Anna, who runs toward the sea in a desperate bid for escape. Police enter the house, placing bags over Ellen’s and Paul’s heads. Paul recalls the moment he first met Ellen in front of René Magritte’s The Lovers painting, a surreal image of lovers with their heads covered. A policeman asks Liz what to do; she says that Josh is with his parents, and the officers remove the Taylors from the scene.

As the final quiet settles, Liz stands amid the wreckage of the family she helped to break, staring at a photograph of happier days with the Taylors. The image lingers, then her face reveals a small, unsettling smile that hints at the costs of power, loyalty, and the fragile boundaries between conviction and catastrophe.
