Angels in the Infield

In 1992 Eddie Everett is one of the top pitchers for the California Angels and helps them reach the American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox. The Angels are one out away from reaching the World Series, but a cruel twist costs them that chance. The loss sets off a personal and professional downward spiral for Eddie that will haunt him for years.

During the deciding ALCS game, a rookie Red Sox batter hits a ground ball to Eddie. He misplays the ball and cannot retire the runner, allowing the runners to score and sealing the Angels' near-miss at the World Series. The error becomes a defining trauma that shadows Eddie long after.

The setback lingers as years pass; Eddie never regains his former form on the mound or in life. He becomes a shadow of his former self, struggling with his career and his relationships.

Eddie and his wife Claire are divorced, and he has little contact with their thirteen-year-old daughter Laurel. He grapples with the consequences of the past while trying to hold his life together as the years pass.

Claire announces she is taking a job in Boston and will leave Laurel in Eddie's care, testing Eddie's readiness to be a father again. The custody shift foregrounds Eddie's personal comeback as much as his baseball one.

Laurel prays for Eddie to get a second chance and reclaim his life and dignity. Her wish becomes the emotional spark that drives the film's turning points.

Under the encouragement of Bob Bugler and a chorus of benevolent helpers, the team begins an improbable winning streak. Eddie's confidence slowly returns as he feels supported by the unseen helpers and by Laurel's faith.

With the angels' backing guiding the team's momentum, Eddie's pitching improves and his relationship with Laurel strengthens. He starts to reconnect with Claire as the season continues and the family begins to heal.

The Angels must win a single game against the Crimson Devils to reach the World Series. The stakes are high as the two teams prepare for a decisive showdown that will determine the pennant winner.

The Devil makes a deal with Randy Fleck to secure Eddie's defeat, promising a soul in exchange for the outcome. A rain delay postpones the game, intensifying the drama and testing everyone's resolve.

To help Eddie reach the game on time, Bob speeds up Laurel's ballet recital, allowing her and Eddie to stay connected as the decisive moment approaches. The interruption becomes a pivotal aid to the team's fate.

Bottom of the ninth arrives with Eddie facing a tense moment as Fleck's at-bat unfolds. Eddie quietly asks God for help, and Bob reappears to remind him that his strength comes from within and from his family's belief.

Eddie fields Fleck's ground ball and fires to first for the final out, securing the Angels' pennant. The crowd erupts in celebration as Eddie reunites with Laurel and Claire in a moment of redemption and reconciliation.
