Wilson’s story reaches its climax when he finally confronts the arrival of his target at the luxurious house. He kills both the man and a woman who come with him, completing his mission in a cold, mechanical fashion. However, when Gloria arrives to meet the scene—likely to discuss her own drug dealings—Wilson’s resolve falters. Despite his initial intentions, he cannot bring himself to harm her, and Ryan, another hitman who has been working with him, anticipates this and quickly shoots Gloria dead. This betrayal cuts deep for Wilson, especially since he had come to see Gloria almost like a daughter figure. The shock of her death fuels his anger and grief, and in a final act of vengeance, he turns his gun on Ryan. The moment becomes personal—Wilson kills Ryan, possibly confirming that Ryan was his second target all along, especially given the evidence of their connection.

After eliminating Ryan, Wilson is overwhelmed by despair. With Gloria and Ryan dead, he walks to the beach while holding Ryan’s body. In a heartbreaking final act, Wilson walks into the water and drowns himself, symbolizing the end of his own life’s purpose and the heavy weight of emotional loss. His death signifies a surrender to both his inner turmoil and the betrayal he has endured, closing a brutal chapter in his life. The merging of his fate with the wrecked ship, the American Star, underscores the theme of decline, loneliness, and the futility of a life spent in violence. The ship, once a majestic vessel now broken and abandoned, metaphorically represents Wilson himself—stuck, exhausted, and out of hope—finally dissolving into the sea as his life also sinks into oblivion. In the end, the film leaves viewers with a vivid image of two old, battered entities—Wilson and the American Star—both remnants of stories long lost, fading into the vast, indifferent ocean.
