Alias Jesse James

Jesse James wants to kill Farnsworth so he can collect the $100,000 life insurance policy. James plans to have Farnsworth assassinated while the insurance man is dressed as the outlaw, making it look like Jesse James died. Then James and his would-be widow Cora Lee Collins would collect the policy money. It's essentially a murder-for-profit scheme using the insurance policy as the motive.

Early in the film, Farnsworth is sent to 'protect' James, which puts him directly in the outlaw's path for the scheme.

Farnsworth unknowingly sells a life insurance policy to Jesse James. When his company learns James is an outlaw, they send Farnsworth to protect their investment. James sees an opportunity: he plans to have Farnsworth killed while dressed as Jesse, collect the $100,000 policy as his 'widow' Cora Lee Collins, and frame Farnsworth for his own death all at once.

After outwitting the James Gang and being hailed as a hero, Farnsworth's standing with the insurance company dramatically improves. His apparent courage and success in protecting the company's interests despite the dangerous situation leads to his promotion to president of the company, completing his transformation from bumbling clerk to chief executive.

His journey from office clerk to frontier 'protector' establishes his changed status.

The film ends with Farnsworth boasting to a client that his policy covers every contingency, only for his wife to whisper something in his ear. He then delivers the line 'Well, you can't get insurance against everything' before shrugging at the camera as 'The End' appears. It's a self-aware punchline acknowledging that no insurance policy could cover the unpredictable nature of life, or the absurdity of the film's own plot.

The entire film plays with the idea of insurance as a catch-all solution to danger.

Farnsworth survives through a combination of luck, his own bumbling, and narrow escapes. Each assassination attempt by James's gang comically misfires or Farnsworth accidentally avoids danger through his clumsy behavior. This runs throughout the early-to-mid portion of the film, creating a series of near-misses that build both tension and humor while keeping him alive long enough for his relationship with Collins to develop.

His designation as 'protector' of James ironically keeps him in harm's way.
