In the vibrant chaos of Venice, California, we meet Alex, a steadfast environmental lawyer who is wholeheartedly dedicated to balancing her challenging career and the needs of her family. Her stay-at-home husband, George, a passionate artist with dreams of his own, reveals a profound sense of discontent. He feels overwhelmed and unable to care for their introverted son, Dakota, or support Alex’s aging father, Roger. As George chooses to leave, Roger takes the initiative to invite Lily, Alex’s spirited younger sister and a fashion designer, to aid in the care of Dakota.

As Alex grapples with the demands of her dual life, she becomes embroiled in a looming legal confrontation against Frank, a formidable property developer and her former romantic interest. This connection adds complexity to an already tumultuous situation. Meanwhile, Roger, a once-popular television actor, is struggling to cope with his diminishing memory and is cast to portray Firs in an adaptation of The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov. His inability to remember lines and cues raises concerns that drive his daughters to seek help for his memory issues.

The stress intensifies for Alex after facing a loss in her legal battle with Frank, leading her to escape her woes through a night of revelry and ecstasy. In a vulnerable moment, she confronts Lily about her lack of responsibility towards Dakota’s education, only to discover that Lily has allowed him to cut classes for weeks.
