In 1856 Alexina Barbin leaves a convent orphanage school and takes a post teaching girls in a coastal village near La Rochelle. Deeply religious, she rooms with the spirited Sara, and the two fall in love. Alexina hides a gender secret, making their liaison scandalous. Desperate for marriage and social acceptance, she confides in the village priest, her mother, the bishop and his physician. After the church and a court rule on her petition, marriage to Sara becomes her only hope.
