What Happens in About Family: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of About Family (2024) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Mu-ok, played by Kim Yun-seok, is the owner of Pyeongmanok, a legendary dumpling restaurant. He deeply worries about his family legacy since his only son, Moon-seok (Lee Seung-gi), chose the path of a Buddhist monk rather than inheriting the business. His world changes when two siblings, Min-guk (Kim Si-woo) and Min-sun (Yoon Chae-na), arrive claiming that Moon-seok is their biological father. Thrilled by the possibility of having grandchildren, Mu-ok treats them with immense affection.

The children's origin traces back to when Moon-seok, under pressure from Director Han (Choi Moo-seong) to maintain a relationship with his girlfriend Ga-yeon (Kang Hanna), agreed to donate sperm. After the siblings lose their adoptive parents in a car accident, their remaining relative refuses to care for them, leading them toward an orphanage and potential adoption in Denmark. To avoid separation, Min-guk tracks down Moon-seok's identity.

As Mu-ok bonds with the children—even attempting a comical hair-dye job that leaves him with red hair—he seeks legal custody by arranging DNA tests. However, he is devastated to learn that Min-guk is not biologically related to Moon-seok. It is revealed that Moon-seok had secretly paid a delivery worker to donate sperm in his place on multiple occasions.

Fearing they will be sent abroad, the children flee into the mountains. Despite the lack of a biological link, Mu-ok decides to adopt them based on the genuine love they have shared. With the help of Moon-seok, the children are rescued. Years later, an elderly monk Moon-seok attends a memorial for Mu-ok, surrounded by Min-guk, Min-sun, and the families of sixteen other children Mu-ok adopted throughout his life.
