Across the Furious Sea

Jin, a Chinese fishing trawler captain, travels to Kyoto after discovering his daughter Nana has gone missing. He begins searching for her, driven by concern and love. The story sets the stage for the investigation into her mysterious absence.

Jin finds Nana's body after her disappearance. An autopsy reveals she was gang-raped and stabbed non-fatally, but died from blood loss. Her tragic death deeply affects Jin and sets the emotional tone for the film.

Jin confronts Miaomiao, Nana's boyfriend, but he evades Jin and flees to China. This confrontation highlights the unresolved pain and leads Jin to pursue Miaomiao to seek justice.

In China, Miaomiao is concealed by his mother Jing Lan, who tries to secure a German visa to protect him. She misleads Jin to keep Miaomiao hidden from justice, illustrating the family’s conflict and tension.

Miaomiao escapes from his mother's hiding place by going to a cosplay convention. Jin pursues him, leading to a physical chase ending with both falling onto an inflatable figurine, symbolizing the ongoing conflict.

Miaomiao finds refuge at his father's mansion after the chase. Jing locks Jin in the mansion's basement to protect Miaomiao, but Jin manages to escape by setting a fire, putting himself at further risk.

A storm ensues as Jing drives to the airport to meet Miaomiao. A collision occurs, incapacitating most involved but leaving Jin able to kidnap Miaomiao. This intense event highlights Jin's desperation and determination.

Jin kidnaps Miaomiao and demands three days of freedom to attend Nana's funeral in Kyoto. There, Jin confronts Nana’s involved peers and commits acts of violence, seeking justice for her death.

Jin uncovers Miaomiao's betrayal of Nana, implying guilt in Nana's death, and claims to have killed him. Jing tries to commit suicide but is saved by Jin, who then gains her reluctant cooperation.

It is revealed Miaomiao's father resents him due to an accident involving his sister, exacerbated by a prank gone wrong. Authorities conclude Nana's wounds were self-inflicted and her death emotionally driven.

Jin releases Miaomiao, whom he had chained in a lighthouse, symbolizing a complex act of mercy. Jin is later convicted of kidnapping and breaking into the mansion, reflecting justice is served.

After serving his sentence, Jin donates proceeds from selling his trawler to a charity supporting adolescent mental health. This act signifies his attempt at redemption and recognition of mental health issues.
