What Happens in About Love: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of About Love (2015) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

At the "Strelka" center, a female lecturer, played by Renata Litvinova, delivers an open lecture “About love,” blending biological science with the romanticism of poetry and music. As the audience participates in various experiments, several intersecting stories of love and longing unfold.

One plot follows a police raid on an anime club. Among those detained are Himea and Taito, a couple who have dated for six months but have only ever interacted through digital avatars. Their attempt at a traditional date fails miserably; they only find common ground and a successful connection once they dress as anime characters. Witnessing this, a lonely police officer, played by Ravshana Kurkova, decides to pursue a similar path to find companionship.

Meanwhile, a businessman, portrayed by Vladimir Mashkov, dismisses his entire staff due to an economic crisis. He makes a predatory offer to his office manager, Yuliya Snigir as Liza: she can keep her job in exchange for sex. This proposal creates a rift between Liza and her boyfriend Grisha, played by Aleksey Filimonov, who has been unemployed and gaming for months. In a twist of timing, Liza accepts the businessman's offer just before Grisha intends to propose to her.

In another thread, Miyako, a Japanese woman visiting a Russian culture festival, seeks a Russian husband via a dating site. After a disappointing encounter with a married man, she finds genuine connection with a fellow Japanese participant from her hometown. After a night of discussing the Russian soul and singing "Gop-Stop" to a guitar, the two fall in love.

Then there is Yevgeni Tsyganov as Boris, a public figure who advocates for removing city monuments while secretly acting as a graffiti artist. He paints the women he loves on city walls. When his wife discovers this hobby via Instagram, she attempts to destroy one of his murals, only to meet the woman in the painting. Instead of fighting, the two women spend a night together and eventually decide to form a throuple with Boris.

The narrative circles back to the lecturer. She arranges a sexual encounter with her ex-boyfriend, who reveals he is engaged but believes his fiancée used a voodoo doll to bind him to her. He seeks a paid consultation to remove the "love spell," but the lecturer refuses to help after taking his money. As she leaves, she crosses paths with Yevgeni Tsyganov as Boris, becoming his latest source of artistic inspiration.

Curated lists built around what makes About Love tick: the same mood, the same kind of story or the same emotional payoff. Each list explains why these movies belong together.

Movies Like About Love: Quirky Interconnected Romance Stories

A playful mosaic of oddball couples finds tenderness beneath awkward, chaotic longing. Explore movies like About Love for playful, episodic romances full of odd matches, comic awkwardness, and unexpected warmth. If you liked About Love's ensemble structure, these similar romance stories balance eccentric humor with loneliness, communication gaps, and unconventional intimacy, often shifting between quick reversals and lingering emotional beats.

  • playful
  • quirky
  • bittersweet
  • tender
  • awkward
  • chaotic
  • Tone: whimsical, playful, bittersweet
  • Pacing: variable, episodic
Why these movies?

The story pattern: Rather than following one seamless courtship, this pattern moves through several romantic situations where characters negotiate attraction, distance, or misunderstanding. Episodes can be comic and brisk, then pause for a vulnerable confession or an unresolved choice. Links emerge through recurring ideas, parallel emotional needs, or intersecting lives, producing a mosaic with mixed rather than uniformly triumphant endings.

Why they belong together: They share a whimsical romantic spirit, an ensemble sensibility, and a willingness to let awkwardness, absurdity, and desire coexist. Their variable rhythms allow brief comic turns to broaden into tender moments, while loneliness and communication trouble prevent the humor from becoming superficial. The films feel playful without erasing emotional complications.

Movies Like About Love: Love, Desire, and Unequal Power

Odd matches and charged encounters expose how desire can blur consent, honesty, and equality. Explore movies like About Love where romantic desire meets awkward questions of consent, status, and emotional honesty. If you liked About Love's mix of playful encounters, workplace tension, role-play, and unconventional matches, these similar romance stories pair sensuality with complicated power dynamics, leaving affection and unease in equal measure.

  • sensual
  • playful
  • uneasy
  • intimate
  • awkward
  • tender
  • Tone: playful, sensual, uneasy
  • Pacing: variable, encounter-driven
Why these movies?

The story pattern: Characters in this pattern are drawn into connection through circumstances that make vulnerability and authority difficult to separate. A workplace proposition, former bond, role-play, or unusual match creates an initial spark, but the relationship then has to withstand misreading, pressure, and self-protection. Their journeys move between comic experimentation and sober recognition, often ending with affection, uncertainty, or a renegotiated boundary rather than a simple triumph.

Why they belong together: Each of these films treats intimacy as more than idealized attraction: desire is entangled with social roles, consent, and the need to be understood. The shared appeal lies in that tension, as sensual and funny setups reveal genuine unease while the romantic thread remains central. They suit viewers who like relationships with playful complications rather than frictionless romance.
