In Visakhapatnam, Chitti Babu is highly educated but idle, and he places great faith in astrology. An astrologer, Poompuhar Devagna Sarma, convinces him that he has Rajayogam and will become a king within a year.

Chitti Babu lives with his mother and his sister Kunthi, who pressures him to arrange her marriage or face elopement. The threat of elopement adds urgency to his already fragile sense of purpose.

Ganga Raju, Rambha’s father, refuses to accept the match suggested by a matchmaker and wants Rambha to marry someone hardworking, even if poorer. This stance sets up the central conflict about wealth, effort, and virtue.

Chitti Babu saves Rambha from bullies, and a lizard falls on him, prompting a visit to the astrologer. The astrologer warns that danger will come from a virgin girl, foreshadowing later twists.

An accident caused by Rambha’s car leads to Rambha falling in love with Chitti Babu. The incident shifts their relationship toward romance while social barriers loom.

Rambha offers Chitti Babu a job at her father's company; he initially refuses, feeling it beneath his dignity. Under pressure from his sister, he reluctantly accepts the role.

Royyala Naidu disapproves but agrees to the marriage after Rambha’s suicide attempt, attaching the condition of a dowry of ₹1,00,000. The dowry becomes the central obstacle for the couple.

To raise the money, Chitti Babu invites a large crowd to the wedding venue to collect gifts, hoping for financial windfalls. The plan shows his desperate bid to achieve status and wealth.

After the ceremony, Naidu thwarts the plan and imposes further conditions, including barring the couple’s first night until the dowry is paid. He offers to accept the dowry in four installments, prolonging the debt trap.

Desperate to raise money, Chitti Babu spins cons like a talking goat and a faux blind loan. His ruse is quickly exposed when the buyers and the bank officer turn out to be Naidu’s friends or relatives. Naidu publicly exposes him and expels him from the life he sought.

Naidu humiliates Chitti Babu’s mother, provoking a fierce heartbreak. Chitti Babu divorces Rambha, while Naidu arranges for her remarriage. The couple’s separation seems permanent as social pressures mount.

Kunthi agrees to marry an elderly man to raise the dowry, accelerating the crisis. Chitti Babu then pursues fortune; after initial failures, he discovers a cloth-mill owner on the verge of suicide and revitalizes the business with new designs. He becomes wealthy and returns to the wedding hall, only to learn Kunthi’s plot was engineered by Naidu to reform him, and in the end, Chitti Babu and Rambha marry.
