On 4 May 1938, a day marked by the high-profile visit of Hitler to Mussolini in Rome, a quiet, ordinary household follows its routine in the midst of extraordinary political tension. Antonietta, a naive yet loving and overworked homemaker, tends to her daily chores while her husband Emanuele leads the six children out to a street parade. The apartment building feels empty aside from Pauletta, the diligent caretaker, and a neighboring resident named Gabriele, a charming radio broadcaster who has recently fallen on hard times. His firing and looming deportation—tangled with his homosexuality and suspected anti-fascist leanings—cast a shadow over the otherwise bustling neighborhood, hinting at a life lived beneath the surface of public obedience.

When a pet myna escapes from Antonietta’s apartment and circles the building, she ends up at Gabriele’s door, seeking help to retrieve it. Gabriele, who has just interrupted a moment of personal despair, extends a cautious warmth. He feeds the bird, and his light, approachable manner intrigues Antonietta, who, unaware of his sexual orientation, begins to flirt and dance a rambunctious rumba with him. What begins as a small, human moment of connection quickly reveals a deeper, more complicated awareness between them.

As their exchange deepens, they discover what holds them together is not shared circumstance but a mutual sense of being constrained by the same relentless social and governmental pressures. Gabriele is forthright about the danger he faces as a gay man and an outspoken critic of the regime, while Antonietta confesses to feeling trapped by a husband who treats education and status as index of worth. Through their conversations, a perception shifts: both characters see the other not as a caricature shaped by politics, but as a person forced to navigate a system that denies authentic self-expression. This hard-won empathy becomes the glue of their fragile bond.

The inevitable consequence of that bond is a night of intimacy born from longing and a desire for human connection rather than a desperate plea for escape. The film closes on a quiet, aching note. Antonietta waits by the window, clutching a book Gabriele has given her—The Three Musketeers—perhaps seeking courage, perhaps comfort, from fiction. She watches as her lover is escorted away by fascist policemen, a stark reminder of the price paid for moments of honesty and connection.
