A Silent Voice: The Movie

Shoya Ishida and his friends bully transfer student Shoko Nishimiya, who is deaf. When the principal investigates, Shoya's friends frame him as the sole perpetrator, worsening his reputation. Shoko tries to help him, and they physically confront each other, resulting in her transfer and Shoya keeping her notebook as a reminder of the incident.

In high school, Shoya becomes a depressed loner whose reputation as a bully follows him. He contemplates suicide as a form of absolution, but begins to glimpse the possibility of redemption as he contemplates making amends. The seeds of change start to form amid his lingering pain.

Shoya returns Shoko Nishimiya's notebook to her at the sign language center she attends, signaling a first step toward reconciliation. He sees that she remains lonely and shy, and she responds with cautious openness. This moment marks the beginning of their fragile reunderstanding.

Tomohiro Nagatsuka, another classmate who feels friendless, befriends Shoya in high school. He explains he owes his safety to Shoya for saving him from a bully, and he offers companionship. Their growing friendship gives Shoya a new social anchor and sense of care.

Shoko Nishimiya reconnects with Miyoko Sahara and encounters old acquaintances Naoko Ueno and Miki Kawai at school. The renewed social ties bring warmth but also reminders of past bullying, complicating her interactions with Shoya. The web of relationships around Shoko deepens the emotional stakes for everyone.

Shoko gives Shoya a gift and verbally confesses her feelings for him, but he mishears her, interpreting the message incorrectly. The moment reveals both their vulnerability and creates confusion and distance between them. This misunderstanding strains their fragile reconciliation.

Shoya invites Shoko to an amusement park along with Tomohiro, Miyoko, Miki, Satoshi Mashiba, and Naoko Ueno, who is eager to reconnect with the old group. The day brings old tensions to the surface as past dynamics threaten the fragile bonds. Naoko's presence rekindles a mix of hope and resentment.

During the outing, Naoko grudgingly slaps Shoko, and Yuzuru Nishimiya secretly records the incident to help Shoya see the truth. The next day, Miki exposes Shoya's past to the group, severing the fragile truce and pushing Shoya into isolation. The event deepens the rift between Shoya and his old friends.

After Shoko and Yuzuru's grandmother dies, Shoya takes them to the countryside to cheer them up. He realizes that Shoko blames herself for much of what happened to him and decides to devote his social life to supporting the sisters. The trip marks a turning point toward genuine care rather than performance.

At a fireworks festival, Shoko leaves to finish her homework, and Shoya follows to help. He tries to retrieve Yuzuru's camera and ends up stopping Shoko from jumping, but falls into the river and is rescued by Kazuki Shimada and Keisuke Hirose. The injuries leave him comatose and in a hospital.

One night, Shoko dreams of a farewell visit from Shoya while he lies unconscious. The vision underscores their emotional link and the possibility of continued care beyond words. It foreshadows a hopeful turn as Shoya slowly regains consciousness.

Shoya awakens and goes to the bridge to meet Shoko, where he apologizes for bullying and asks for her help to keep living. Shoko reassures him and agrees to help him keep living, marking a heartfelt culmination of their reconciliation. He admits his initial plan to end his life but chooses a path of mutual support.

Shoya returns to school and is welcomed by his old friends, who still care about him. They all attend the school festival together, and Shoya tears up as he realizes he has finally redeemed himself. The group demonstrates the power of forgiveness and shared resilience.
