A Letter to Momo

Momo Miyaura faces the profound sadness of losing her father, Kazuo. His passing sets the stage for her and her mother, Ikuko, to leave their familiar life in Tokyo and seek solace elsewhere.

Momo and Ikuko embark on a journey from the bustling city of Tokyo to the serene Seto Inland Sea. This transition represents a significant change in their lives as they move into Ikuko's estate on Shio Island.

Upon arriving at Shio Island, Momo feels a sense of displacement, missing her previous life. She is welcomed by family members Sachio and Sae Sadahama, along with Koichi, a postman with a secret affection for her mother.

While exploring the attic, Momo discovers a unique picture book filled with stories of goblins and Yōkai from Sachio’s father. This find hints at the adventures and mystical elements that are about to unfold.

Three droplets suddenly fall from the sky, transforming into playful yokai: Kawa, Mame, and their leader Iwa. Their arrival signals the onset of magical occurrences around Momo and her new home.

With her mother enrolling in nursing classes, Momo feels increasingly alone and overwhelmed by her fears. Strange sounds and supernatural activities around the estate heighten her sense of isolation.

During a frantic escape from the mischievous yokai, Momo meets a boy named Yota. They share an instant connection, and soon after, Momo befriends Yota and his sister, Umi, amidst the chaos.

As a thunderstorm looms, Momo seeks shelter and encounters the yokai once again. During their interaction, the yokai reveal that they have a history of wrongdoing and were once gods punished for their misdeeds.

A misunderstanding with Kawa leads to a conflict between Momo and her mother when Kawa accidentally breaks Ikuko's mirror. This incident evokes painful memories of Momo's last argument with Kazuo before his death.

In the midst of the emotional turmoil, Ikuko suffers a severe asthma attack. This triggers Momo’s desperation as she realizes the urgency of finding medical help for her mother.

Momo, determined to help her mother, sets out to find a healer across the island. Koichi and Yota join her, and during their journey, Momo reveals her feelings about the last fight she had with her father.

The yokai realize that their chance of redemption lies in helping Momo and Koichi. They assist in crossing a newly completed bridge in search of the doctor to save Ikuko.

In a moment of vulnerability, Momo writes a heartfelt letter to her late father, expressing her gratitude and emotions. This act provides her with a sense of closure and healing.

During the traditional tōrō nagashi ceremony, Momo and Ikuko reconcile their differences and come together to honor Kazuo’s memory. This ceremonial act symbolizes their new understanding and connection.

Embracing a new chapter in their lives, Momo joyfully swims with Yota and their friends beneath the bridge. This moment signifies a fresh start filled with hope and happiness, moving forward from past sorrow.
