A Fighting Man

Growing up, Sailor's mother tells him the story of Percival, a 15-year-old boy who wants to become a Knight in King Arthur's court. She warns that the journey will be tough and that Percival might never reach his dream. The tale frames a theme of perseverance and personal cost that echoes through the film.

Percival reaches Arthur's court only to be ridiculed for his non-noble birth and lack of obvious skills. He refuses to be deterred and vows to study the ways of knights. He commits to training, determined to prove himself worthy.

Sir Lancelot notices Percival's potential and agrees to mentor him. He teaches him the disciplines and code of knightly life. The mentorship marks a turning point in Percival's journey toward knighthood.

During the mentor-led training, the Red Knight emerges, intent on destroying the Grail and menacing Arthur's knights. He defeats many of Arthur's champions, creating a sense of urgent danger. Percival rises to confront this powerful foe.

Sailor's life mirrors the tale as his mother Rose battles cancer and wants to travel to Ireland one last time. To fund their plans, he negotiates with promoter Fast Eddie and secures a loser's purse of $4,000. Eddie describes Sailor's upcoming opponent as a young fast mover who can't absorb a heavy punch.

Sailor convinces his old training partners Brother Albright and Max to get back in shape for the bout. Albright still works at a local restaurant, while Max joins the camp and helps prepare for a younger, faster opponent. The group trains to make one last stand in the ring.

Father Brennan tries to persuade Rose to have Sailor back out of the fight, arguing for caution. She insists the decision lies with Sailor and that he must choose his own path. The scene heightens the personal stakes surrounding the bout.

Solomon, a younger, faster boxer, seeks a way out of his current life and returns to his old coach Cubby. Cubby negotiates with Fast Eddie to include Solomon in the upcoming fight and even offers a $10,000 purse. Eddie hopes Solomon can deliver a knockout that catapults his career.

Solomon's mother, a drug user and alcoholic, cannot cope with his desire to leave and fears he'll return. Her instability adds pressure on Solomon's career choices. The family dynamics deepen the emotional stakes of the upcoming fight.

Eddie wants Solomon to sign with him as manager, promising money for training and living expenses. He urges Solomon to leave Cubby after the fight to join his stable. The negotiation tests Solomon's loyalty and ambition.

Leading up to the fight, Sailor, Rose, Solomon, Father Brennan, and Diane Scheuler—a recovering alcoholic—work to overcome their inner demons. They confront guilt, addiction, and regret as the fight approaches. The emotional buildup raises the stakes far beyond boxing.

Diane Scheuler, recently released from prison, attempts to seek forgiveness for what she did to Sailor's wife and children. Sailor rebuffs her advances, though the possibility of forgiveness lingers. Her presence reinforces the film's arc of atonement.

The fight begins with both fighters trading blows, but Solomon is clearly younger, faster, and stronger. Sailor must out-think him and lean on his greater punching power to survive. They go toe-to-toe through nine grueling rounds.

By the eighth round, Sailor is barely standing and not punching back, yet he finds a burst of energy to respond. Fast Eddie offers a large bonus to quit, but neither man yields. As the final seconds unfold, Sailor flashes to the tragedy Diane caused, which steels his resolve.

When the bell rings, Solomon is declared the unanimous winner and the two men share a moment of mutual respect. They head to the locker rooms, while Diane passes Sailor and he hints that forgiveness may come in the future. The film closes with the sense that redemption remains possible but unresolved.
